Everyone jumps in when the govt subsidizes a sector… then, eventually, reality sets in. Looks like Ford is also “pausing” their second battery plant.

Good, let’s keep the Chinese from our automobiles as much as possible.

..and everyone whines and complains when other countries take ownership and lead the markets when the government does not step in.

The battery supply chain is about 1/2 fully dominated by one country. The rest are minor players. It's a market that is probably at its peak with current technology. Why invest in current technology, the rate of return is not going to be there.

Some owners get b@lls deep in their EV superiority/investment.
That needs to be protected & reassured every day.
When a guy pays that much money for something (anything) he really wants to convince himself that it wasn't a mistake. I think that's a lot of the loyalty behind Harley's and John Deere and others. It's hard to be objective when doing so would including admitting a big mistake.

Speaking of which, I really want to like that Ford, but I'm having a little bit of buyer's remorse

Meh. I haven't found any make that's consistently easier to work on than others. They all cut corners, and they all do stuff that makes you wonder if the design engineers have a clue what the real world is like. I've cussed "Japanese engineering" just as much as I have American or German.

Having worked on both sides of this (in a different industry) I really think that a lot of the blame we heap on "engineers" is more appropriately laid at the feet of the bean counters. The Ford doesn't have a gas cap, saved some pennies x millions of cars. Probably works great in the city and my friends (who don't have kids but have nice new cars every few years) have had trucks w/out caps for quite awhile and aren't reporting any issues, so it didn't concern me. Now I realize that, living on a dirt road, it may be a little bit of a bigger deal for me than for my townie friends. I have a hard time believing that an engineer made that decision (and I have a strong dislike for Ford engineers in particular since the '80s).

Really?

I think you're looking at the wrong coffin, and forgot how to count up all the nails:

Auto execs are coming clean: EVs aren't working

But keep your dream alive, I guess.
Sorry you fell into that Clock Bait trap.

If you will do your own research, you will realize EV sales are increasing today in the United States.

The non tesla EV vendors have hit themselves with the Osborne Effect by announcing they are moving to the Tesla charging standard. Naturally, frugal-minded people are going to wait a couple years so they can get that feature so the car is usable for cross-country travel like today's Tesla owners enjoy.

ICE cars prices are going up due to labor cost going up. The big 3 and other car manufacturers continue to kill off ICE production due to loosing market share to EVs. The big 3 are going to move production over to EVs as fast as they can because of the lower cost for labor.

Are you in the market for an EV today?

You didn't read the article at all did you?

If you had, you would have read that the CEO's of Ford, GM, Toyota and Mercedes AND EVEN YOUR VAULTED TESLA (you have heard of those guys, right? The ones that actually RUN car manufacturing companies?), THEY are the ones saying it. In calls to their stockholders. You know, the folks they are beholden to in order to keep their jobs.

Jeeze man, how tight can you cling to your dream?
