Why some people are too stupid to own a car

I avoid dirt roads around here whenever possible. The county does a good job of keeping them scraped and fairly smooth , but they also pull the ditches (of washed or scraped sandy dirt) occasionally. This brings all manner of trash, bottles, and other crap out of the ditches and back onto the road bed.

I see between 3 and 5 autos on my morning commute without taillights on. Pretty common in fog and rain as well.
Lights Off, Nobody Home..... it's everywhere, unfortunately......

..... I've started to regard this as Part of the Marketing for Driverless Cars......

Liking Aaron's painted sensor approach...... it's nothing more than a low-level hardware issue, that strangely has been neglected amongst all the mandatory road-vehicle requirements today.....

If not Nevada you can try a lot of the center of the USA. We have a quite a bit of that traffic here at the park. People that like to ride gravel or back roads, along the creeks and through the hills. You can hundreds of miles and see very little (if any) traffic. Just had a dude here from Wisconsin and road 700+ miles in 4 days and had a ball.

I've always liked Middle of Nowhere..... last coupla decades, even more so....

Even for people who never have/will ride a MC, I recommend videos that Itchy Boots does..... smart lady, with interesting information about parts of the world that I likely will never see.......... the drone shots she does, 600km out into the Sahara..... IMO, she is today's National Geographic, on 2 wheels.....

Good threads also on Advrider, on guys (typically, if I can still use that designation in public.....) doing the Trans America Trail, and closer to home(s), local BDR routes. Great fun on 2 wheels, and I suspect these threads help some out-of-the-way businesses survive a bit longer.

I watched most of the different trips. but need to finish her North from south America to Alaska ride.

Her Rally ride- and all around Africa was a Kick.

She doesn't need to work for anyone else now either. You Go girl!

I never drive faster than 20 mph on the dirt / gravel roads. All driving at speed does is sandblast your undercarriage and cause the wheel wells to fill up with crud. Modern vehicles with no grease plastic insert ball joints and tie rod ends will fail sooner with the sandblasted crud plus it's hell on your disc brakes.
I drive thousands of miles of dirt roads every year. 20 mph isn't very practical. That's why I run 10 ply tires... I very rarely have a flat.

Sandblasting actually keeps the frame clean.
It's the chance of coming around a blind corner on a narrow dirt road and meeting an unexpected vehicle (usually bigger than me).
That's why the trucks have CBs, and often MURS depending on the road system.

And why I check in with my service contact before hitting a haul road for a quarry. I want those mammoth haul trucks and heavy equipment operators to know I'm gonna be there.

Yes, I laughed to myself when I saw his post about not driving over 20 mph. Most days I'll put on at least 200 miles, all on dirt roads. 20 mph just isn't feasible if I want to do anything else but drive.

But having grown up in a similar area, I can understand where he's coming from. He lives in a state half the size of Nevada that is criss-crossed by paved roads every few miles and has no idea of what it's like to drive in a state where in 400+ miles there are only 3 paved roads that go north-south and only 2 paved roads going east-west. Everything else is served by dirt roads and if you want to get to your destination in a timely manner you drive at a speed appropriate for the road you are on.
