Why is this? Same ignition key for all L models.

My L2800DT uses the same ignition Key as does a L3000DT model. A Tractor mechanic told me all the L models use the same ignition key. Why is this?

Hello Terry,
Keys are used mainly to prevent accidents, not theft. If someone is intent on stealing your stuff a key is not going to make any difference. However if a kid, or someone that has no business being on anything with more than a 5 HP engine happens across your tractor, the lack of a key in the switch may keep them from testing your fence /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif, and other things.
Even the door locks on Kubota cabs are all keyed the same /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif. KennyV.

The key for a Kubota B2910 is exactly interchangable with a New Holland TC24 and visa versa.

Not all.....The L39 has a key specific to the machine. Not sure if Kubota is moving in this direction, or it's due to the fact that a TLB might be left on job sites, so it's more of a theft issue than when a machine is in sombody's barn or garage.

and the key for a B2910 also fits the Kubota ZTR mowers, at least the one I borrow from my neighbor. Of course, that also means he has a key to my tractor.

Because Kubota uses cheap locks (ignition switch) just like the motorhme manufacturers do.

If you have a key to the storage bins on a motorhome you have the key to the storage bins on most motorhomes. Same deal, savest the manufacturer $ 0.79 on every unit.

In my opinion, anything changed in a product since 1945 was done to make it cheaper. Sure there are things added to make a product stand out against the competition... But once added, next year it will be changed... It will be lighter... It will be plastic... It will be outsourced to China... But one thing for sure, it WILL be cheaper. Some wiz kid from some grad school will get a bonus for cutting $3 per unit, and I will get to lay on my back in the basement, changing a plastic part on a 4 year old washer...

And you, will get the same key on every tractor.

Do we need different keys on every tractor? Probably not... But that surely isn't why all have the same keys. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

I would think Kubota has a reason for this.. possibly thinking of farmers who might have a variety of machines but not want to carry around a loaded keyring all day.

I'm sure if theft is an issue there are alternative anti-theft measures that can be taken.

I see construction crews get creative with thier big rigs..

In that case Jim, a screwdriver placed in the key slot with a wrap from the palm of the hand to insert it into the key slot snugly and a turn of the wrist is all that is needed. I agree with the others, it has nothing to do with theft prevention.

My take is it is simply a preventative measure to keep an honest person or kid from wondering if "will this thing start" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Rat, I may have posted this before, but when I was helping my neighbor cutting and baling hay, he had 1100 acres of Corp of Engineers land leased for 4 years around the lake; part was heavily wooded, some was farmland before the government took it to build the lake, and there were both dirt and asphalt roads in different places, but all roads had been blocked with heavy metal gates. We once finished baling about 7 miles from the house, and he and his wife were going to Tennessee for a week early the next day. Since we would be using that old Oliver to get the bales out of the field when he got back from Tennessee, he decided to just hide the tractor deep in the woods and leave it there. A couple of days later, I noticed someone had driven it about a mile up to one of the gates, rammed the gate with it, but neither the gate nor the chain had broken, just bent the gate, then ran the tractor into the borrow ditch and left it. I had keys to the gates but didn't have the key for the tractor. I also didn't have a screwdriver with me, but found that the blade on my nail clippers worked just fine and I drove the tractor to a safe location. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I was talking to my dealer the other day and he said all b series keys were the same. Sure enough they are. My key from my b7500 worked in my b2630. One thing he did point out to me on my 2630 is the starter has a removable fuse. I dont know if its for theft but if my tractor is somewhere else its a little better feeling i know i can remove it.

This is not just a Kubota thing. Both my JD's use the same key, and I still have a pair of Cat keys somewhere from when I worked for a dealer that allowed me to start just about any piece of equipment on the lot.

I wanted a spare key for y B2400, so took the key to the dealer so he could cut a new one, he just yanked one offf the shelf, they are all the same. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I have a car key that works perfect in both my car and the back door to the house.

I don't know about that, however you may be right. The key is very inticate and the ignition "plug" doesn't look easy to just force a screwdriver in....there's a fair bit of metal.

If somebody wants to steal it they will, but this key will make some difference IMO. Yes, it will definitely help deter the kid or fool trying to take it for a joy ride.

Not sure if you intended to make us laugh, but I'm laughing. That's geat and so true in most mass produced products.

There is a balance though for companies. Kubota has done a great job balancing quality and efficiency. They make great tractors....and the things that really matter are pretty heavy duty. I'm more than pleased with what you get for your money.

I think I came to this conclusion about two years ago. It is a bit liberating once you realize the truth. I no longer seek the "Best" of everything anymore. I look for reasonable value and assume it's all so so quality. I've also decided that anything bought from Sears is best bought with the extended warrantee.
