All I can say is I sure didn't know and I've used my share of grease guns. To tell you the truth though I don't think I've ever had the need to adjust one. There has been times when it was hard to get off but all I had to do was cock to the side and pull.

I'm gonna ask around here to see if I'm the only dummy in town

well, your at least not the only dummy in the state. i was not aware that the tips adjust either, but like you, i just worked the gun back and forth on the tight ones and the tip came loose.
