Maybe during a TBN get together we could invite a philosophy professor to talk after dinner. We could all come in during the talk with Kubota, New Holland, John Deere, Kioti, etc. hats on and listen intently -- Perhaps bring up these kind of issues.

The why's and why not's of 4wd are completely independent of tractor make.

In the simple analysis of your problem, it appears as though you would not have been able to extract yourself out of the situation without your 4wd. Another proposition was given to use differential locking and in your case it was not used.

I think I got it. It reminded me of a supposedly true story of a Harvard Philosophy professor who for a final essay exam, simply asked the question:

Why?

While most of the students frantically wrote, a clever student, simply replied:

Why not?

Apparently, according to the legend, he received an A.
