Why do you live where you live?

My family came down to Calhoun County Florida in the 1880's. The 200 acres of the Larro Ranchero is a small part of the land they homesteaded. About 1000 acres of the land around me is still in the extended family, and an equal amount was lost during the depression. Both sides were from North Carolina, and made stops in South Carolina and Georgia along the way. We did look at houses before we built, but in the end the pull of family land was just too strong. That and the Chipola River. There is a county park with a boat ramp now at Lamb Eddy, near where my great great grandfather Earnest Lamb had his homestead. The picture is looking downstream toward the park from my cousin's land.

A lot of people like all four seasons. Where we live is a compromise, but we like that there are no discernible seasons. I little rain in winter (5 or 6 inches) and a little hot in summer (whopping 95 this weekend). And fewer bugs and poisonous critters than most other places we would consider.

Still, it is not where I would choose given truly free choice (mostly meaning unlimited funds).

Speaking only English is a disadvantage, too. I understand retiring in Costa Rica can be very nice.

Widowed. Retired. Remarried, sold everything and left the big city. Moved to her home in a small town. Now I have 6 dogs, 1 cat, 110 acres, lots of power toys and a beautiful wife. Does it really get any better than this? I thank God that He has blessed me so abundantly.

FLORIDA. NORTH FLORIDA IN PARTICULAR.

I worked in multi-state sales. Moved to Florida because: 1. Florida does not have state income tax, so that money could go into retirement fund and 2. So I would not have to deal with snow on my own time.

Chose North Florida because it is uncrowded and has pristine air. Cost of living, especially real estate, is relatively low.

The winters are divine. July-August-September are uncomfortably hot and humid, so we travel, some, during this period. I am retired now.

You have 110 acres in the Vatican? Your wife was raised in the Vatican?

Man, you have an "in".

The only downside is skipping church on Sunday is probably frowned upon.:D

North central Florida. I have thought about the possibility of south Georgia or Alabama, maybe even South Carolina. At one time we though about WVa, but after being gone 20 years, and going back to visit, I don't think I would choose it. If I won the lotto, I'd have a section (640 acres) in North Florida, a section in WVa, and maybe a camp in Belize.

Florida has its problems; it costs like a northern state and pays like the deep south, but I hate cold, and there isn't anywhere further south that speaks English except the Caribbean countries (and I have it on good authority white folks should live there)

I was born in Seattle. My siblings live in and around Seattle. We visit Seattle during the Winter.

My lot and residence in North Florida cost 1/3 to buy and build relative to its Seattle area equivalent. The air in Seattle is pristine, unlike most large cities. Seattle is the 20th largest city in the nation; just passed Boston again. The weather in Seattle during eight months? Well……….

I prefer the country.

I guess I over stated. But the cost of living isn't as low as in middle Georgia and other areas. The pay is bad compared to national levels, at least outside Jacksonville and Gainesville. No experience with Orlando, Tampa, or Miami.
