Why do you live where you live?

Initally because it was the cheapest place to buy a big farm on decent land and English speaking . Apart from Australia but I don't think I could handle that much heat !

Because it's the best place in the lower 48 to get away from all the problems associated with bigger cities like crime, gangs, traffic, ridiculous real estate pricing, etc.. I have to drive over an hour just to find a Lowes. Lots of people claim to be isolated in highly populated states but its' not the same IMO.

Alaska is the next step.

I have good friends who live in Gardnerville. He's a retired pro motorcycle racer (Class C and Motocross) and he & his wife are still pretty active in the vintage racing scene.

Would your friend be the guy who has a motorcycle, sans engine, as "lawn art" on Foothill? His place was pointed out by another friend (who is serious about bikes, has a restored Vincent Black Shadow) as being a retired and prominent racer.

Sounds like Richard's kind of lawn 'art', LOL! Yeah, he lives on Foothill, Dick 'Bugsy' Mann. I haven't seen Kay & Richard in decades; so busy with day to day stuff we've lost touch. I really need to give them a shout one of these days.

I'm with old brin about letting Ray Charles tell me story. Me maternal ancestor came to America in --- 1656!! To Virginia, like most in that time, then years later, my ancestors moved to Georgia. Paternal side came straight to GA from Ireland in 1784. So, me roots are pretty deep here. Like old Hank Snow's song, I've been everywhere, lived overseas many years, been really about everywhere. I could live in many places I've been, but since me place here in GA is paid off and I'm into geezerhood, reckon this is where I'll stay the remainder of me days. Four seasons, but I could do without even our mild winters! Very ho' today, but a good breeze. If I was filthy rich, I might move to California. I'd have to be to afford to live there! I've lived in San Francisco area and loved it, but alas, not only is me account a bit low for that, me politics are a bit too conservative for most folks there. That wouldn't bother me though, as long as they didn't bother me. But, I love California! What weather! Mmmmm.... I ain't too old to move!

The south Shore of Nova Scotia suits me just fine.

Ideally time split between Weins, Zermatt and the south shore would also suit me.

I live out in the woods of Maine because I have guns and I drink (I AM kidding). Very quiet up on my hill, fall and winter are my favorite months. Retired, so fire in the wood stove, stew in the crock pot, and a little snowshoeing makes for a good day. I putter around the house or yard just about every day so I keep busy. Simple, quiet life.

The upper peninsula is on my list to see. Heard it is beautiful.

Very interesting thread you started here....I cannot help but wonder how many of the members responding actually chose where they live, or if circumstances dictated that. Not gonna hijack things, however. I traveled all over the UP of Michigan as part of my job for 31 years, it is a beautiful place to see but very difficult to reside in, the winters are so brutal it amazes me anyone can cope.

Born and raised here, my wife also. I'd really like somewhere warmer about January....

Hey....wait until you die...it will be so much warmer then....sorry I could not resist that one....

Not really a hijack and IMO, an interesting bit of info to add. In my case, chosen. The first time I drove through this area (August 1964) I knew I wanted to live here. Took a few decades of bumping around the country to get back, but I'm home now & will die here. With a bit of luck, not any time soon. :D
