( I have a 10 yr old MTD self propelled walk behind that is down right now because my wife loaned it to a cousin and he bent the crank on a stump. So I guess MTD's are junk.
BTW the deck has ZERO rust after 10 years, looks to be powdercoated. I did have to replace the drive chain once, but have done nothing else to it except a few oil changes. I am going to put a new crank in it and use it for at least 5 more years /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
This mower lived in Tampa Florida for 7 years multching that tough viney stuff they call grass down there twice a week for most of the year.
I even bought another MTD self propelled walk behind last year when the crank got bent on my old one.

And I guess taking my power craft MTD L&G tractor into the dealer over and over and over again for the same problem that was never fiixed during the 3 year warranty period makes it a quality product.

No, that tells me that the mechanic/repair shop didn't know what the h___ they were doing.

Ben, mowing in Fla., it was sandblasted everytime it was used. Probably explains no rust. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I had very good luck with older Briggs engines (early 90's). I had horrible luck with Briggs engines up from around 95 - 2002. I just got a Bolens tiller from Lowes with a 6.5 horse Briggs and have had nothing but good luck from the engine

Hey MWood,

Hey Guys, you'all talking about Briggs & Stratton engines, made me remember that the 12hp B&S engine in my MTD, is an I/C (industrial/commercial)motor. Now I don't know if that makes a lot of difference, but I have noticed that not all of the B&S engines are I/C motors. And I do have 17 years on mine, mowing about 1 1/2 acres.

And I do remember looking back, that I did want the I/C motor, in hopes that it would be more durable.

Anybody have any idea, how much I might get for my 17 year old MTD, if I repaint it and not tell them how old it is. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I may sell the MTD, and put the money's toward a 3point hitch mower for my bigger tractor.

Have a nice day,
Joe /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

*** The I/C (industrial/commercial)motor. is the problem engine in my Wards PowerCraft MTD.
Seems like the engines are OK but there is a design flaw in the carburation.
This being the case no mechanic can fix it no matter how good he is.

Yep, but It has been up here in KY for 3 years......
It is still good and green on the underside. btw it is green and yellow, maybe it is a Deere hiding out under the Yardman label /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

the IC or Beiggs engines with cast iron sleeve will last a long time. The aluminum bore Briggs are a very limited lifespan motor.

I must have taken it back to the shop 8 to 10 times during the 3 years.
On top of that I took it to another repair shop another 3 or 4 times after the warranty period and it was the same deal the problem wasn't fixed there either.

Next I installed a new CARB and it ran fine for a month or 2 then right back to the same old problem.

This tells me It's a lemon and no amount of working on it by anybody no matter how good they are will ever fix it.

You can't blame a lemon on the mechanic.
You have to give him something decent to work with before he can do anything with it !

( I disagree: MTD sells the tractor they owe the customor the performance.
It's called implied warranty.

Over the weekend we had my Aunt and Uncle over for Easter. Parked in our driveway was an $83,000+ Mercedes-Benz that he purchased only 6 months ago. When they were leaving we noticed a bubble the vertical length of the sidewall from the rim to the tread on the front passenger side that stuck out about 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif.
* Does that make the/a Mercedes-Benz JUNK?????? Please. )

No but it don't absolve M B from the obligation of making the tire right with you uncle any more than a defective B&S engine on my MTD relives MTD of their obligation to make the engine problem right with me.
