Now that's an interesting site....spent way too much time looking at several of the studies there which deal with questions I didn't know to ask.

OK here is the deal: Women are expected to look their best, by other women and of course men. We men LIKE to see women in pretty shoes. I know I do. Women put a lot of pressure on other women to look nice at social functions also. If a women rebels and down-dresses, she will be ostracized, by her peers. And it is a fact the the prettier and more expensive the shoe, the more pain it will cause the wearer. But women will endure the pain to look good for other women and for men. It is the price to pay for social conformity. As Robin Williams once said, another term for lesbian is "women in comfortable shoes".

Weren't you taught to complement a woman on her shoes (unless she was barefoot)?

That and her hair are the only two points that's safe to complement them on. I can't walk up and say "Your legs to your shoulders look great!" Or any of the other fifty things I may be thinking.

Yeah. Actually, I don't see them so much as hear them.
Heels make a distinctive sound on a hard surface.
I used to work in an office with hard floors.
There was one woman who worked there who was exceptionally good looking and always dressed in beautiful clothes.
She also wore heels that made a distinctive sound. You could hear her coming from 8 desks away.
When she walked by, all the guys would stop working and look at her, me included.
After I figured out what was going on, I got kinda peeved, because I couldn't resist looking when I heard the sound of those heels.
Made me feel out of control - like one of Pavlov's dogs - just ring that bell and I can't help but drool.

I don't understand women, but I do observe them in order to try to understand. I have noted that they really REALLY like shoes, and it need not have anything to do with attracting men. Other women also like shoes and a woman will wear shoes sometimes to impress other women. Women frequently will judge men by their shoes too. Not wishing to invest in truck loads of shoes for women, I make sure I myself wear very shabby shoes. Women know that men don't care about what shoes they wear, but a man can make some headway with a woman if he comments favorably on things that women worry about. For example, tell pretty women they are smart and tell smart women they are pretty. Tell ALL women their hair is lovely and tell them their shoes are nice unless they are obviously not nice (don't inform them you are a scoundrel by telling an obvious lie.) Don't comment about a women's ankles or calves unless you know them very well, and sense they have issues there. But you need to be pretty expert in your comments or they will come off wrong, so it is better not to attempt ankle or calve comments at all.

Well I look at a lot of things.. and I did not say I look at the shoes first But I do appreciate a pretty pair of shoes on a woman. And as others have stated it is something you can compliment a woman on without worrying too much about hearing from the HR department. It seems to mean a lot to them, and having nice shoes is something they put a lot of thought and interest in.
