Why 5W30?

I believe charge pumps pump about 10% of the volume of the variable speed pump.

It provides make up fluid and fresh cooler fluid to flush the hot fluid from the tram case and sends it through the radiator.

Eventually, all the fluid gets filtered.

They make high pressure filters, but they ain't cheap.

My concern with adding a filter to something like the PTO etc is the burst hazard if the filter clogs. Whatever you install needs to have a bypass capability that matches that circuit.

The PTO valve probably has a relief valve and will relieve if the filter clogs.

No problem to just add a an external relief valve and run the relieved flow to tank

I agree that there are hazards, but there are also benefits.

The counter argument is the lack of observable sludge or film in the tank that suggests that the current 30 micron filter and flow does a reasonable job for the amount of dirt that I put into the system.

I was thinking of either a filter on the return line, or one on the bypass to tank circuit, both as low pressure filters, both with an integral bypass, for all of the reasons above. The completely external one that would connect up to the PTO fittings in front seemed... too awkward.

For "normal" filters, the filter can will explode well before the PTO relief kicks in. A filter rated for 3000 psi starts to cost bucks if you want to have any sort of capacity. I could never find an affordable one. A low pressure filter on the return with a bypass would be fine. I would add a pressure gauge so you know if it is filtering or bypassing.
