I was told by my Toro dealer that Toro makes their own machines except for the cheaper models you will find at the big box stores (Home depot, etc.)....they are made by MTD for Toro.

Thats correct, the Toro's you see at HD are built by MTD and are more "stripped" down versions of the Cub Cadet's. Cub is MTD's top line.

Toro dealer told me the the Toro commercial ztrs are the same as Exmark except for the deck.

Toro also makes the lawn and garden tractors for New Holland. Their just painted blue for New Holland instead of the Toro red.

The Johnserad / Huskaverna group are tied to Singer (sewing machines) who also own other saw brands.(forget which ones)

I agree that often paint is the main differance.

Also many items get 'sub assembled' in China and completed in USA and then often say 'made in USA', depending on % of domestic content.

Very true- in the world of global manufactruing and marketing, we will all soon be driving vehicles made solely by GAM (General Automobile Manufacturing.) The only difference we will be able to see is the price of what is now a $20k car will be $40k in a couple of years to make sure the cats at the top of GAM are well fed as they are at the top of the oil companies.
