Buying Advice who makes the biggest EFI small engine?

I have been looking at a Kohler 40 hp engine for a machine that I'm building. But I really like the electronic fuel injection engines. I would like to get as close as I can to a 40 hp horizontal shaft engine. Who makes the biggest one that you know of in the EFI.

You should list more parameters for specs. Gas or diesel, air or water cooled, weight restrictions and any thing else that is pertinent.

Over the last 10 or 15 years I have watched the air cooled horizontal shaft motors rise in hp, 40 hp is higher than I have seen. If this is a DIY project then consider a used aircooled VW motor too, if more power is needed.

I haven't looked at the specs but could you make and ATV engine work? I don't know if it would fit what you need but you can get them with EFI and over 40hp.

I am looking for an air or liquid cooled engine, gas and there are no really other specs that I need to worry about. Kohler makes a 29 hp engine, But I was hoping to get a little larger than that. And I also want to stay under the $4000 range

I would think you could just walk into an ATV dealership and order an engine as if you were replacing one in an atv but I don't know if they will work size wise.

Kawasaki sells engines and their stuff has always been top notch in my various ATV's, UTV's, lawnmowers, dirtbikes, etc...

It looks the largest horizontal shaft engine they sell is a 31 hp / 55 lb.ft. V-twin OHV Fuel Injected 825cc liquid cooled engine and weighs 127 lbs.

It looks the largest horizontal shaft engine they sell is a 31 hp / 55 lb.ft. V-twin OHV Fuel Injected 825cc liquid cooled engine and weighs 127 lbs.

yes I have seen that engine, and they do make a 37 hp vertical shaft engine, but I don't know if I want to make a compromise to go with a vertical shaft. Because it is going to have a triple hydraulic pump attached to it.

I made a few phone calls and ATV engines are not that easy to get. Plus it would be a lot of retrofitting.

Check out the surplus supply store that advertises on this site... they have a Kubota diesel around 47 hp, for less than $4000.00.

I don't have the specs on the pump handy right now, but a smaller engine will run the pumps, but I want to be able to add other stuff later like a PTO.
