Some people have attempted to interpet it that way Mossroad, but if you read all of the first 10 admendments they specifically address the rights of the people, not the states.

It's short and it's sweet and I knew it complete, when I wore a younger man's clothes, but we continue to wrangle over what parts of it mean after all these years. Ain't democracy grand, and entertaining!

I find it interesting that most folks that have quoted the 2nd amendment here as:

"the right of the People to keep and bear arms"

Do not quote the entire sentence:

A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the People to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed.

That entire sentence has to be interpreted, not just part of it.

The word "People", as mentioned in the preamble:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence,http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Preamble_to_the_United_States_Constitution#cite_note-0 promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

may refer to the states, not the individual.

Once again, this is historical and not political.

When the history of the years encompassing the birth of our Nation is read and understood, the reference to both the Militia and the people in the Second Amendment is necessary. During the time when the nation was struggling to gain its independence, the Militias were comprised of men between the ages of 16 and 50 years. In 1776, seven of the thirteen colonies were in the process of adopting constitutions which stipulated that these same men acquire and maintain various forms of weaponry, specific amounts of ammuntion and related accoutrements. These same men were then obligated to serve in the Militias.

Now, rereading the text of the 2nd Amendment it becomes clear that in order to maintain the security of a free State, a well regulated Militia is necessary. That well regulated Militia is made up of men, the People, who must keep and bear Arms and their right to do so ",,,shall not be infringed."

Back to the original question, I sent in my application for a lifetime handgun permit in the state of Indiana on Monday. The lifetime permit thing is relatively new. My previous 4 year permit expired in mid-November. Had I applied for the lifetime permit before then I would have saved $15.

The process was overly beaurocratic. I first went to the sheriff, where I filled out some information for them to do a background check. He gave me a state form to fill out and get notarized. I also had to get a certified check for $50 for the state. Then I took my notarized state form back to the sheriff, where I was fingerprinted by a rather attractive female deputy. I filled out the information on the FBI fingerprint card, added it to my state form and certified check, and took that and the oversized envelope they gave me to the post office to get the $1 first class postage. I am told to expect my license 'sometime'.

And my question would be who here belongs to a militia that is not employed by the goverment? I'd guess VERY few.

Maybe just not admitting membership! :) Oh and I do have a CCW.

More power to those who want concealed carry. With my job I have been carrying a gun for 14 years while working. As a rookie I carried that gun everywhere while off-duty. As I have gotten older and now have small kids, started later in life, I am paranoid of having a gun lying around. My service weapon I keep unloaded and tucked away in a high away locked area. When Kansas was in the process I was against it due to the minimal amount of training needed to actually carry concealed. It appears it is mostly money the state is getting. Since the state has implemented it, it has not been so bad. There have been very few individuals I have contacted while working with a concealed carry permit. Not a bad thing, it is a right.

It's odd how things change, when I was a kid every house had loaded guns no problems. Kids would be home by themselves no problem. What the heck has happened?

Yep, Bill, things do change. When I was a kid (oldest of 5), we all knew that Dad had a loaded .22 rifle and a loaded 12 gauge shotgun in the closet in his and mother's bedroom. And we were certainly not afraid of killing or hurting anyone else or ourselves with the guns. Of course, we were sure that Dad would kill us if we ever touched his guns.:rolleyes:

And of course, I was a police officer before I got married and had kids. When I was home, my service revolver was on top of a fairly tall chest of drawers and was loaded. By the time the kids were big enough (tall enough) to reach it, they knew not to. And my revolvers were never a mystery to them, because they knew early on that I'd unload it and let them handle it if they wanted to, but since it wasn't a mystery, they just never took an interest in guns at all.

I know what you mean, my dad and grandfather were both police officers. We had 38 colts loaded, ready to go, I still have them. I knew they were tools, no mystery, not to touch. We all shot target all the time. Where has the common sense gone.

I do. It's called the 'Matt Jr Malitia'. It's a one man malitia that may or may not at times include family and friends. The same malitia is ready to defend it's 2nd Amendment Right. Any goverment that tries to take it away will need backup. One person isn't gonna be enough. Like said by the late Charlton Heston "They can have my guns when they pry them from my cold dead hands."
