The process was overly beaurocratic. I first went to the sheriff, where I filled out some information for them to do a background check. He gave me a state form to fill out and get notarized. I also had to get a certified check for $50 for the state. Then I took my notarized state form back to the sheriff, where I was fingerprinted by a rather attractive female deputy. I filled out the information on the FBI fingerprint card, added it to my state form and certified check, and took that and the oversized envelope they gave me to the post office to get the $1 first class postage. I am told to expect my license 'sometime'.

Gee, $50 for a lifetime permit? That seems like a pretty good deal.

Here in the northeast corner of the country, it costs us $40 for a 4 year permit. NH charges half that much, and VT doesn't require one to CC.

It's odd how things change, when I was a kid every house had loaded guns no problems.

-Sheeple being voted into public office at an alarming rate.

-The MAJORITY of LARGE city folk being liberal and deciding for the rest of the "rural" part of the state and nation who wins in elections.

I do. It's called the 'Matt Jr Malitia'. It's a one man malitia that may or may not at times include family and friends. The same malitia is ready to defend it's 2nd Amendment Right. Any goverment that tries to take it away will need backup. One person isn't gonna be enough. Like said by the late Charlton Heston "They can have my guns when they pry them from my cold dead hands."

Amen. This is the militia that our founding fathers wrote of. Just more historical facts.

Back to the original question, I sent in my application for a lifetime handgun permit in the state of Indiana on Monday. The lifetime permit thing is relatively new. My previous 4 year permit expired in mid-November. Had I applied for the lifetime permit before then I would have saved $15.

We pay $50 for 5 years, other than that the process was the same - except the female deputy was not attractive
But she was very nice.

After 4 weeks I got a phone call to come and pick up my fingerprints card. I could either pick it up or let them destroy it and I chose to have it just for kicks. To pick it up I walked - without warning - into a room full of deputies. It could be my upbringing, but I feel somewhat intimidated by police force. Don't get me wrong, I was the most overgrown man in the room, but uniform just spells trouble to me

I got the money details a bit wrong. Perhaps my memory was focussed on the cute deputy and not the money. Anyway, the certified check to the state was for $75. I paid the cute deputy $50. If my previous license hadn't expired I would have owed the state $60. So the total was $75 to the state, $50 to the cute deputy, $1 for the certified check, $1 postage, and several hours of running around to different offices.

For what it's worth, I have never carried in public, concealed or otherwise. I do own .357 and .22 handguns, as well as several shotguns and rifles. I've found in the past that a handgun permit greatly simplifies and speeds up the process of buying any type of gun from a retailer. I used to be pretty big into buying and shooting guns, purely for fun and entertainment. Now I'm much more into tractors, purely for fun and entertainment

Criminals target those that appear weak. If they knew they were more likely to get shot for commiting a crime it would make them less likely to commit the crime they were planning. Gun control only makes it safer for criminals.

I disagree with this particular statement. History has shown us that the prevalence of armed citizens in close proximity to each other fuels violence and criminal acts instead of deterring them. Anyone familiar with the true history of the American old west knows this. In fact the only way men like Wyatt Earp and David Cook were able to clean up towns and cities in the west was by prohibiting carrying firearms inside of town and city limits. Experience had shown these men that the fact that everyone had a gun did not reduce crime but increased it, and the best way to reduce crime was to ensure that only peace officers were armed inside of town and city limits.

Once firearms were banned within city limits, those cities began to grow and thrive as law and order settled in.

On the flip side, it's important to point out that the second ammendment was in fact designed to ensure that the citizens of a given state were able to throw off corrupt government, being ratified by most states within a few years of the writing of the Declaration of Independence. It was always intended to empower the people to organize and defend themselves should the government find itself moving closer to the totalitarianism of King George.

So the second Amendment was not ambiguous about the rights of the people to own and bear arms in their homes, or to organize as a body when necessary to defend the integrity of their societies from corrupt government or other threats, but the notion of people walking around in town with side arms was not specifically permitted by this Amendment, nor should it be.

Our own history has shown us that law and order will not come by having everyone carrying guns in open society, but by the opposite.

On the few rare occasions that uniforms spelled trouble for me I deserved it.
