white means air or water entrainment.. in your case.. I'd guess water.

also.. it's important to realize that it is not 'hydraulic oil'.

it's a common sump machine, so your oil lubes the tranny, diffy, and hyds.

a UTF meeting the m2c134 spec is good.. or a mineral gear oil in the gl1 / gl3 level.. or a gl4 /5 80w90 gear oil that also carries a MT1 rating, and is yellow metal safe.

to dewater that sump I reccomend you drain it nearly all out ( holds 5g or so.. ) dump in 2 gallons of diesel, a quart of old F atf, and 4 pints of 90% rubbing alcohol, then take her for a drive around the pasture.. don't engage the pto.

then drain her fully.. remove the bottom bolt in the side cover where the dipstick is. add oil dill it dribbles from that hold. may be anywhere from 4.5 - 5 gallons depending on sump cleanliness.

also I suggest getting an I&T fo-4 service manual, master parts catalog and an owners manual..

And then run it until warm and drain and refill.

WOW Soundguy! What a plethora of info you are! (no kidding) Awsome. When I read that I expected what rsewill said as well, get it done then drain and refill AGAIN. Where did you get that info from anywho? I am not contesting it, I want to know he history if there is any...

I have to ask, Why NOT run the PTO as well as other circuits with that mixture in it? Do we not want to purge those fluids out of hoses as well?

At one time there was a white oil(mineral?) may still exist??. With that written I highly doubt yours is that type. As the others have said you more then likely have water mixed in. I would do what Soundguy suggested he is the mechanical buddha of the ford tractor :D

Soundguy is correct. My 8n had a "Milk Shake" in it for hydraulic fluid. When you turn the PTO on it also turns the hydro pump on, you don't wont to run diesel in the the pump with all the dirt being flushed lose. You may need to drain the fluid 2 or 3 times to get the water out.

i may have jumped the gun being color blind i didnot realize the fluid was actually yellow and a car mechanic i know told me this was a yellow hydraulic oil. when he felt the fluid he said that it was fine

Is it milky, or can you see through it. clear, red, blue or yellow, it should be translucent.

did the mechanic actually look at a glass jar full or did he just have a tiny bit on his finger? There is no way to tell just by feel. When in doubt, do the change and clean out, instead of having an issue/worry.

ideally, you will not have to keep refilling and wasting GOOD oil. that's why I gave the instructions I did. the alcohol in the mix will DISOLVE the water. water is polar.. alcohol is a polar solvent. thus water is carried out in soloution. the diesel thins the oil. what you have left in the sump will be very little water and some thinned oil.. if you refill it and then run the machine normally.. you stand a good chance of flashing the remaining moisture off... vs wasting another 5g pail of oil..

if you were just doing oil flushes.. yeah.... it will take a while to get it all out as it emulsifies..

BTDT dozens upon dozens of times.. :)

What soundguy suggests. I went with the straight fluid flush and a handful of changes. I would suggest not going my route but using a solvent rather than hoping for an emulsion. I had a lot of water and now I see none but haven't tried a crackle test.

If you have any question on if you really have water in the oil, just send a sample out for analysis.

i think a UOA for the gear oil in an 8n is quite comical... :)

It will be 100% noticable if it is clouded or emulsified.. :)

the price of a good UOA will almost cover a cheap pail of utf oil that could be used as a flush.. or will totally cover the previous flushing agents I mentioned, and pay a lil towards the new oil going in.. thus rendering the question of 'if' a bit of moot point.
