With the wildly successful "WHY DIESEL" post, I thought I would try my luck at another post. This one hits a bit closer to home. I recently took a new (and much higher paying, thankfully) job at a hospital in my area. As most of you know by now, I bought (before taking this job) a new King Ranch F250 diesel. It has been a really nice truck so far, and I really like it. One major issue has arisen. It does not fit into the parking garage at my work, it is too tall to go under the awning and is unable to make the sharp turns without backing up (there are eight). This sounds like a small problem, but it is not. The professional deck at my work is one of the few good parking areas not a mile or more from my work, and with me starting most days at 0530, time is of the essence. I drive 35 miles one way to work. I formerly did a fair amount of towing but now mainly tow only my JD 3720 to my parents about one monthly to do work for them. My total maximum load is just over 8K most times. Thusly, I have thought of trading or selling my beloved KR 250, mainly due to lack of use. My father has loaned me his old 2000 F150, which has 202,000 miles on it. It still runs well, but likely is not a good long term solution and is two wheel drive and I do generally need four wheel drive during winter where I live (at least some). I can afford my current truck, but really feel I am wasting money if I have paid on (and still pay some) on a truck I only drive when I am off and on weekends. When I drive, I generally drive a lot, but the truck also sits quite a lot in my garage. My question to the panel is, should I consider a different truck and (no branding here) what?? The trucks I am interested in would be: 1. The GM supercab 2500 with the Duramax (my friend has one and it DOES fit in the deck--tightly); the Toyota Tundra and the Ford F150. Some items to consider outside the trucks themselves are: I like diesels, but do not necessarily have a need for one now, but do drive a fair amount I priced a Chevy Duramax LTZ the other day at $42K, but it did not have a couple of the items I wanted. One spec'd to my liking would be about $43,500 or so it appears. The Toyota and Ford are about the same in price, in the mid $30,000 range for purchase price with the options I would like. The Ford actually seems more expensive, but I have an excellent salesman who really cuts good deals on those products. I do not want to buy a cheap second car, I want whatever I choose to be my sole vehicle and to drive it daily. I also want something that I can pile my wife and two year old twins into and go. Mileage is not that important. I should note that I am in no way dissatisfied with my current rig and could keep it as long as needed until I decide. Certainly, my final option would be to keep things as they are and drive my father's old truck until it dies, but the wife is getting testy about our "used car lot" with all the vehicles, etc. The thoughts of the group are appreciated.

I am probably not a good person to answer this post since my wife and I have two vehicles each. I would throw out another option for you. Keep the truck. I have a duramax 2500 hd and would not part with it for the world. I do know about parking problems I went to dallas last month and the hotel parking garage opening was so short that on the way out I missed hitting the top of the opening by about an inch. I also have a 1998 chevrolet tracker that I drive to work. It is a 4 wheel drive and gets an honest 29 miles to the gallon. Since it is so light and has such a short wheel base it is by far the best performing 4 wheel drive I have ever owned. They are about as bulletproof a vehicle as I have ever seen. I have 151,000 on mine and have done nothing but routine maintenance ( change oil, tires, at 80,000 miles the timing belt as per maintenance plan and a new battery) You can pick one of them up pretty cheap and they are a hoot to drive.

Simple question can you swap parking spots with janitorial or maintenance staff & keep driving the KR? Some places have them park in loading dock areas with better accessibility?

If not maybe it's time to build another shed at home for the KR & keep borrowing the 1/2 ton till it quits.

0530 in a parking garage I'd want something small for all those turns. I think a Porsche 4wd would fit thru there pretty well :D

You could probably buy a good commuter car for less than the beating you'll take on a trade. Keep it and add a good used TDI to the fleet.

ok since you are thinking of jumping ship over to gm let me through my 2 cents in. As a gm guy i think you would enjoy the d-max alot and since they are lower to the ground you could make it in the parking garage but the turning radius might still be tight on a 4 door short box. my wife is a RN and will not drive my 4 door short box half ton to work, but has no problem parking her denali. maybe something else for you to look at is a truck like the one I own, its called a v-max has a 10,500 towing capacity (16500 gcwr), 4x4 and can be had for less (depending on options) than the d-max you are looking at. I have pulled my b3030 all over the place with it and had no problems other than i think the rear springs are week and i am working with GM to correct that right now. The v-max also has displacement on demad which means it operates on 4 cylinders when you dont need 8 and from your commute that might be a good idea.
drop me a line if you want any more info

I think a Durango can tow more than 8K, I know I've had about 8,500 behind mine.
Then there are the Tacomas...

I am with cp1969. I have a used Crown Vic which will probably run a long, long time for commuting (25+mpg) and out of town trips when I don't need my truck.

You could probably find something used at a good price and keep your truck that you like instead of getting hauled to the cleaners on a trade.

Nothing wrong with allowing yourself a little luxury anyway.

I was in nearly the same situation you were back in may. I had a 2006 F-350 4x4 Diesel and loved it. Towed a 16000# trailer 6,000 miles a year and a 7000# trailer twice a month. Anyway got divorced, sold the big trailer, sold the truck and got a 2007 F-150 4x4 FX4 supercrew and could not be happier. Towed the 7000# trailer 800 miles when it had just over 300 miles on it and got 11 mpg at 70 on the highway. It has 3.73 gears and does great. It is actually much better in the much than the diesel, mainly due to the tires. It has averaged 15mpg in town and got as good as 19mpg on a road trip with the little bed loaded with camping gear and firewood. Then again you could do as the others said and buy a $3000 beater.

JCMSEVEN: The "financial beating" you will take make may cancel out your new salary? Unless you need a truck for the commute with the 4x4 capability, I would add maybe a good used/new 4x4 Subaru or similar; that is easy to park, and offer comfort for the family on short ventures? For peace of mind, I would work the equation both ways, and find the cost of "trade-out," versus an additional vehicle. That King Ranch is a classic truck, and may come back to regrets if you sell it?

My philosophy has always been, when you are uncertain of a decision of change; don't change anything!

I have to agree with everyone here; reconsider a commuter. 70 miles a day racks up miles on a nice truck. E rated tires are a LOT more expensive than pizza cutters on a commuter car. So are brakes, shocks, etc. And, with lower miles, the truck maintains a better value.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I really don't need to commute in a 3/4 ton diesel 4x4 xcab longbed. In the warm weather, I frequently commute on the motorcycle. Cool or rainy weather, I have to use the truck. I'm really thinking about a commuter. Something used, a few miles on it, 30+mpg.

Where are you towing? 70mph? My truck/trailer combo's can easily, safely, and comfortably blow by 70mph, but out here in The Peoples Republik of Kalifornia, trailer speed limit is 55mph state wide... Don't ask how that point was reinforced in my knowledge by going 65mph in a 65mph zone with a trailer...

I'm with the crowd that would keep the truck, since you like it, and add a commuter. Maybe a Subaru wagon, or a small to midsize SUV, or a large sedan, whatever floats your boat. A diesel pickup will stay useful and worth having for decades, especially if you don't drive it as a commuter car.

Another benefit for me by having the Crown Vic to go to work in--I can load my truck, tractor, and trailer the night before a trip--take off work a little early the next day, park the car, jump in the truck and haul #$*. I never use my truck anymore except for what its meant for (taking my wife on a date is the exception as she likes riding in the truck). Keeps off the miles and its always ready to go.

I mainly tow throughout Tenn, KY, and Southern Indiana. I will end up getting a ticket now, thanks!! :)

If I could buy any truck I wanted, I would personally get exactly what I currently have. The only problem I have with owning it is that with my current needs, I do not drive the truck much at all, and it seems silly to me to own and pay for a truck of this level which I have not driven much. As with most folks, I can always see increasing my towing mileages again but I do not see this happening in the near future. If I were to trade, I am sure I would lose some money; I got a fairly good deal on the truck to begin with so in the correct circumstance I would probably come out OK. I think the Ford dealer mentioned would work pretty well with me, as he has done so so far, but it must admit it would be a struggle for me to go from a 250 level truck with the diesel to a gasoline 1/2 ton, even though it is probably what I need right now. My dad's high mileage truck still runs great though. It burns about one quart of oil for every 6000 miles of driving and gets a steady 18 mpg on my commute. Thusly, I do not have to make any hasty decision.

Ya can't have too many vehicles. I say keep the truck and get something to commute/park . Personally I like driving a car around more than a truck anyway and they are less per mile to operate. I'd get a lotus elise but you want/need 4wd so maybe a awd911. Bmw makes a nice 330x too if ya want to haul the wife and kids. I think audi might even have a diesel.

OK dont laugh at me but I had a 2005 duramax but did not like the mirrors so I traded it for a 2006. I still have the 2006 probably because I love the mirrors on it.
I guess I should add that I wanted the 6 speed allison transmission and chevroelt had a 4th of july sale with 0 per cent interests I actually traded and got smaller payments. But it was the mirrors that clinched the deal. I am very happy with my duramax. If I drive the speed limit. (not that often I will admit) I can get about 20 to 21 miles per gallon which I like considering it is a 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive. Usually I get around 17 which probably says a lot about how I drive. My wife has pointed out that when she drives the porsche she gets 29 mpg. When I drive I get 19 I am sure it is the difference in weight between us which makes up that extra 10 mpg loss when I drive.

bx23barry. I am 6 ft tall and weigh 240 I test drove an elise it was a great car but it took me 5 minutes to figure out how to get into it with the top down. only took me about 3 minutes to get out of it. You have to be pretty limber and skinny to drive one of those. They are made to buy drive to the track put the number on it and start racing. But they are a blast to drive.
