How about a profile on the budjet and time you have to mow?

With that much open pasture, you'd be wise to start at the M series.

And if your in a hot and humid, dry and dusty, fly and bug enviro, then a cab might help you out.

I am doing 57 with a B series and it can do it, but it takes a long time. I'd like to get an M to compliment the B.

Thanks for all of the input. My budget is $20,000.00. I don't need to cut the the whole pasture in one day. I could cut some in the evenings and some on Saturday. The last dealer I went to suggested a L3240 HST w/FNL , R4 tires, 6' finnish mower and a canopy. He said the price would be $20,500.00.
What do ya'll think about that package? I forgot to ask him how much more the L3540 would be.

For that much land, I would suggest going with a bush hog, instead of a finish mower. It can still do a fairly nice cut, and if the grass gets a little out of hand, the bush hog will always be able to cut it, whereas the finish mower might get bogged down.

I purchased an M5700 for my 36 acres, and I've been quite happy, but it's not within your $20k budget. I've never used a canopy, so I can't speak to how much that helps. I suggest getting as much horsepower as you can afford.

You might be able to add some implements or attachments later, but I know you can't add horsepower! :D

I'm installing a nitrous oxide kit on my BX24 tonight. ;)

Hello Lab Owner - I started out with a similar situation about twenty years ago and bought a Kubota L245DT with 5 ft finish mower, 5 ft cutter and a plow and drags for some specialty farming. I would spend about 15 hours on this machine to finish mow 15 acres. Obstacles and reversing direction account for the acre per hour mowing rate. This tractor (22 PTO HP) was just too small for what it needed to do.

Fast forward through another tractor (blue - a mistake) to what I have now: a Kubota L3430 and a Deere 2240, both with loaders. Finish mowing is now 5 hours with a Woods RD8400. The the added 2 feet of width takes off 5 hours and the reduced amount of turn-around accounts for the rest. I use the Kubota for the mowing as the deere is just too large to drive around the trees and close to the house. The deere is used for a six foot rotary cutter. 50HP on the PTO makes mowing tall grass easy with this machine. The deere also pulls a 4 ton dump cart.

I agree with canoetrpr that you should look at the biggest tractor that you can afford. Driving a tractor at a very low speed gets dull quick.

I think that you will like the L3240, but it will be light on the HP for your needs. I think that riptides has a good suggestion to look at the lower HP M series, although the L4400 might be the best value for you.

One other thing: don't forget to get at least one rear remote with your machine. Easy access to hydraulics will make your life much nicer over time.

Best regards,

Mark

Lab, If all you're going to do is mow fields, then I would look at the MX5000su, and the MX5000dt, there simple and 50hp. I would want a 6' rotary cutter at minimum. I own a L4400 and love it, but for just cutting flat land the MX5000su is $13k around here give or take. IF you plan to do multiple tasks than the L4400 might warrant a hard look. I'm not knocking the Grand series but you will need hp, not B&W's. 40 acres gets bigger in Aug..... ......IMO CLay

Welcome to TBN:)
Suggest you fill out your profile further.. it helps answer questions.
Bigger is better, you know it's true!

I'm biased... I happen to think that you need exactly what I have... L5030, HST, cab/AC, etc. Others have already properly spoken to the benefits of 50 hp, cab/AC and hystrotatic transmission and cruse control.
