It's almost time for my 50 hr service on my 1026r which requires changing the transmission fluid and filter. My owners manual says to use Low Vis Hy Gard hydraulic fluid. The parts salesman at the JD dealer I went to told me to use regular Hy Gard because it was better suited for our region (central Alabama). I want to make sure this machine is taken care of. Does it matter which fluid I use? Thanks.

I'm thinking low vis is the "default" fluid because it is suitable for all regions. Considering your geographic location the regular Hy Guard would be just fine,as your dealer stated.:)

Either will work just fine, but I would listen to your dealer.

I'd go with the owner's manual. Unless you never have plans to use the tractor and/or hydraulics in temperatures below 30F. Then the regular HyGard will be fine. It's about 20W, as opposed to 10W for the low-vis. Keep in mind, this is a common sump tractor. The fluid operates the transmission AND the hydraulics. On individual sump tractors, the hydraulic fluid of choice for cold climates is AW32 (10W equivalent). Choice for moderate climate is AW46 or AW64 *(20W), warm climate AW100 (30W).
