Which Deere to purchase?

I'm new to the forum, and new to tractors in general, so please forgive my lack of knowledge. I recently purchased a house with a little more than 2 acres. I plan on mowing 1 acre, tilling/cultivating/planting the other acre, moving firewood/mulch/stone, and plowing or blowing snow from a 600 foot driveway in the winter. I've got my eye on a 2520 or 2720 with a 200cx loader, 62" mower deck, and a plow or blower. Should I be looking at smaller tractors like the 2305, or perhaps even something in the garden tractor category instead? Thanks for any advice you can provide!

With just 2 acres a 2520 or 2720 might be a little big, but other might disagree. There are still some 2305's out there but that unit is being replaced by the new 1 series from JD. I just watched "John Deere Live" on RFDTV. The show had both 1 series tractors on there, the 1024E and the 1026R. I liked the nicer features of the 1026R. One of the really cool features is the "auto-connect" for the mowing deck. Just drive over the deck and the PTO connects by itself. The loader also is VERY easy to connect by yourself. The problem is that they are not coming out until June after they were delayed.

I would agree with JdOneDayas far as the 2520 being overkill. I have a 2520 and can't imagine that much tractor for only 2 acres. I have one patch of lawn that is a bit over an acre that take about 40 minutes to cut. I think I would go with a 2305 or the new 1024e or 1024r at the most. I had a 2305 and think it would be a good fit for 2 acres or even more. The X7xx series is about the same price with no ROPS and can use a multitude of aftermarket three point hitch attachments.

2520 has $2500 off price.. I can tell you after owning a 2210 since 2003 I was over working it with Tilling and loader work..I had the hydrostatic so hot once from moving dirt I had to cool it with a water hose, then changed the fluid immediately..At 280 hrs it was time to trade it and it had given me no troubles..The 2 pumps on the 2520 seem to cure that problem.. The 2210 is great for mowing and snow blade work..

A 6430 Premium Tractor shall do well on your property of 2 acres to do DONUTS WITH! :laughing: This 2520 should suit you pretty well.

The 2020 series is not too big for your need. I have a 2320 and think a machine like that might just be the trick for your needs. The 2520 and 2720 are both excellent also, and would likely make short work of what you are needing. I have never been a fan of the 2305 as for just a little more money one can get the 2320 which is a lot more machine with many more features. The new 1000 series appears to have addressed most, if not all, of my concern with the 2305. Given the fact that Deere in most cases works hard to make sure its new releases are trouble free, I would have no reservation about pricing that machine for potential purchase when it is available. As for the X 700 series, do not overlook them. Many on the forum poo-poo them as a "garden tractor". They are; but they have the capability of a sub-compact or low HP compact for everything but loader work and are available in diesel (which I would recommend). They also would be well-suited to the type work you are planning. They are also simply the nicest machine of this type you can buy. My neighbor has a 4720 with a Frontier tiller and a 595 (the predecessor to the 748) with a 648 tiller also. He almost exclusively uses his 595 for his garden beds due to its maneuverability and it will tear up some ground with the tiller. All this said, my order of recommendation: new 1000 series; 2320 or 2520 (not 2720--too expensive for what limited extra it would add on a two acre plot); X 700 series and distant last a 2305.

That's what I was thinking however, an X7xx series can approach the price of the 2520, especially with the current $2500 discount on the 2520.

I may end up doing side work with the tractor such as landscaping, hardscaping (paver patios), fence installations, etc., so I'd probably rather get the larger tractor.

Your in the same boat I was in with about 4 acres or so, 2520 may be just a bit more tractor then I need but it beats being a bit to small.

Although I don't use my 2520 for agricultural work, I do think you can get most any small category 1 ground engaging attachment to work well. It's a matter of making more passes and not getting too aggressive.

Last fall I bought my JD2520 for snow removal but also for food plots for deer. I could not get the tiller at that time so I got a box blade and a rake. I put the scarfers down all the way and ripped the ground and leveled at the same time .Then I used the rake to get all the old grass and junk from the soil. I did this a couple times then planted the seed it worked great. This took a little longer than a tiller would but I had very good results and learn alot about the tractor at the same time. I just got the JD655 tiller this year to go deeper for the veggies and corn. but for food plots or lawns the box blade and rake works just fine. Hope this helps.

i think you will be dissapointed if you didnt go with the 2520, i have a 3320 and LOVE it. all the 2520 is is the same thing just downsized. if you want to plow i dont think the lawn tractor wil have enough power. go with the 2520

I am interested to hear what you decided on. Me, I have 2 acres also and I want a 3720. Of course, I have some pretty big plans for the 3720 just around the house and if I ever get a hunting property like I want it will have plenty to do. Plus, I prefer to have more tool/machine/truck than I will need in the first place. That is one reason I bought the F350 crew cab. Most of the time, I am not pushing it to its limit, but on the few times I had to haul something that an F150 would have struggled with, I was happy that I had the F350 with a diesel engine. I have seen my dad struggle with his F150 way too many times.

I've got a Deere 4400 with 7' RFM for two acres...now, that's serious overkill!!!
But, I wanted a reverser transmission (after 2 non-sychro gear transmissions) and the salesguy I've dealt with for 10 years made me a great deal. The reverser just came with a bigger tractor then I needed.
I really like the tractor a lot. But the mower is really just way too big.
