Where\'s the Snow???

I dont know about the rest of you New Englanders but down here in Massachusetts it has felt like Mid May rather than Dec 1! This trend of middle 50's (and no end in site) is starting to take its toll on my soul. I have my plow all ready and my eyes plastered to the heavens but not a drop of white stuff has fallen. Has anyone yet had the joyous task of clearing their driveway of what now seems surreal white fluff ?

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Ben,
Had a couple of good dusting of snow this week but no plowing yet,and after last winter in one of my post I promise not to pray or pount for snow...learn my lesson.
At this time the temp 60 degress up here and feels good...must be I'm getting older.

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Maybe all your snow is here, in Utah! In the last 9 days, we've gotten 2 1/2 FEET of the light fluffy stuff (typical Utah powder.) Its all I can do to keep up with it! I've run my tractor (Kubota B2710) 10 times in the last 9 days clearing various snowfalls. With compaction, we still have 18" on the ground.

Not that I mind. I live for winter. My favorite past time is snowmobiling. We'll take our first real ride this weekend! :)

The attached picture is from last year, although the tractor looks the same, we have more snow already than in that picture. Gives the gist of things though.

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Not me /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif So far whatever snow we've gotten here has melted right off. Temps up in the 50's today.

No complaints from me about the current lack of snowfall either./w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Now that is a cool snow machine! I thought I was hip with a curtis on the front, now I see one with a blower behind...GWE (green with envy.)

No snow here and don't miss it one bit. I actually heard that the NE is going to take the role of the South and visa versa. /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif I wish.

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Ben -- We had five inches of heavy snow a couple of weeks ago. I didn't plow it hoping more would come soon. But like you, Northern Vermont is bare of the white stuff. Today was t-shirt weather clear up to the high thirties with nary a flake in sight.

Ever hopeful, I put the ice chains on Clementine. Put the winch away for the season and will put the blade back on tomorrow. But the ten day forecast calls for scattered showers here and there. Global warming..?

We all seem to forget how last winter went. /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif You all got more than needed. Click here for a thread that Thomas started last year. It may refresh your memory of how last winter went in New England. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Global Warming.... Maybe? However, I have heard that this year is supposed to be a good snow year for the Northeast due to the minimal impact of El Nino on us. What has everyone else heard?

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Ben,
From wildlife specs..trukeys are about 2 pounds heavier..deer having 2&3inches of fat on them, the bears just plain fat,and if this is a sign from the wildlife to gain as much weight before winter, than another hard winter shall arrive /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif lets hope not.

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

If I am fatter than I was last winter, does that mean a harder winter, too? /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif/w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif/w3tcompact/icons/tongue.gif

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

I sit here at 7 AM on Sunday morning, waiting for the sun to come out to clear out another 8-10" inches of new snow. The weather heads on TV said 20% chance of snow last night. I guess we should be glad it was only 20%!

I'll post a picture later today and you can see why I have BOTH a blade and blower. When I originally bought the tractor (summer of 2000), I only got the blower. I added the blade early last winter (fall of 2000.)

I'm now wondering whether I should have bought one of the monster plow/blower trucks UDOT (Utah Dept. of Trans.) uses to clear the highways around here! :)

Let's hope not, Mike, or I might have to buy a snow plow myself./w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Out here in the Foothills of the Sierra's in Northern CA. we've been getting pounded pretty regularly over the last week or so. Yesterday, we went to get our Christmas Tree up at about 4K feet in Pollock Pines and it was snowing there at 10AM. I suspect our ski resorts are very happy about now as I think they've gone from not open just before Thanksgiving, to open and doing good business on Thanksgiving. They probably have about 6-8 feet of snow up there by now and it's headed your way. As we say out here, the storm door is open. This AM the wind is blowing about 30knots although it's dry. Supposed to start raining again by mid day I think.

I think the weather guy's are expecting the Candian air to start moving into the Ohio River Valley over the next week which means cold down to Florida and if you've any moisture in it, you'll have more than enough snow to deal with. Carfeul for what you wish for, you may just get it.

Yep, Todd, it looks like winter has finally come to Californy. /w3tcompact/icons/crazy.gif

Down here in the Bay Area I was up before sunrise this morning, pumping water out of the swimming pool and moving a portable sump pump around to a couple of trouble spots around the yard. Rained like the dickens all night and is still coming down.

Pump water out of the swimming pool, you say? Yeah, they tell you to do that 'cuz you don't want water to overflow and settle in on the outside of the "bowl". Fact is, the soil is so saturated right now, I doubt it makes a bit of difference, but I figure I better make room for the next couple of storms which are already on their way.

As for the foothills, I'm over a hundred miles away from my tractor property, and I can just picture my poor li'l culverts getting the test of their lives. /w3tcompact/icons/frown.gif It's outside of Sutter Creek at about 2,000 feet. What kind of pounding do you think it's getting, Todd?

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Well Harv, We're in El Dorado, not too far from Sutter Creek and I'll tell you what, this is a pretty nasty storm. Wind's are up to 80 mph up in the mountains with 3' more snow expected by tomorrow AM. It's been raining hard since I got up at 5:30 this AM and it's blowing hard about 25 with gusts up to forty here.

I've got 12 acre's up on the other side of 50 about 3 miles from Coloma on top of Thompson Hill (1,650') and I'm gonna head up there to see how my trenches across our gully are doing as well as check out the driveway grading and culverts. Of course I'll also check on my 1920 and wish it wasn't raining so I could finish my water line trench.

We just moved from the Bay Area (San Carlos) and I used to pump out the pool and move sumps around when it started coming down hard as well. Pretty miserable work.

When you planning on moving up here full time? I'm also in tech but on the hardware side working for Philips.

Todd in cold and wet Placerville.

Re: Where\'s the Snow???

Here's a picture of the picnic table in our back yard. Thanksgiving day, it was raining here with no snow on the ground. All this has fallen since then and this is somewhat compressed! We get a lot of airy light powder, 6" of which will pack down to less than 1" as new snow falls on it.
