Not to sound like a broken record, but where is the thermostat? Will it be obvious if it's stuck closed?

Your thermostat is under a two bolt flange right on top of the water pump. the top radiator hose attaches to the two bolt flange.

Before pulling it make sure your actually overheating. Is coolant actually boiling out of the system?

If you are certain it is over heating then the first test is to crank the tractor while cold, hold your hand on the upper radiator hose. When the engine reaches the thermostat set temperature you will feel that hose get hot rapidly. If it does that then the thermostat is likely working.

You can also pull the thermostat out, put it in a pan of water and set it on the stove. A cooking thermometer would be nice to observe the water temperature. You will be able to see it start opening around 160 to 180F. If not, it has a problem.

Thanks, Winston. I am headed out there now to do some troubleshooting. I will report back when I know something else.

Okay, I removed (what I hope is) the thermostat:

To answer your earlier questions: No, I'm not sure it's overheating. Nothing is coming out of the radiator, except the (what I think is) normal overflow into the clear plastic tank on the right side. The fluid level is between the "full" and "low" marks; nothing is leaking out of that tank, either.

Moving the thermostat from the pan of boiling water to cold water from the tap doesn't appear to have any effect; I'm not sure what I'm looking for, but unless it's a very tiny change indeed, nothing seems to be happening.

EDIT: Might have a problem...the part I removed (which was under the two-bolt flange where the top radiator hose connects) looks NOTHING like the thermostat on Hoye's website. I wonder what I removed and boiled?

The temperature sensor. It was not under the two bolt flange. Unbolt the two bolt flange, that is where the thermosstat is.

Well, I'm out here again and frankly I can't figure out what to unbolt to remove the flange. There are 3 bolts on the aft face of the flange that look nearly impossible to remove. There are a couple on the front that are similarly difficult to get to. It looks like I'll have to disassemble half the engine to remove that flange.

I'm going to try your "hand on the hose" trick and see what happens. Stand by.

Okay, after 8-10 minutes at fast idle (1900rpm), the temp gauge is redlined and the top radiator hose is hot to the touch (but not too hot to touch). Reducing speed to slow idle (1000rpm) for a few minutes drops the temp gauge to the middle of the normal range.

Oil won't shoot out, might get a few dribbles. Your oil light is not an indicator your oil level is low, it indicates oil pressure is low. Of course low oil pressure can come from low oil level.
this

But ,I can't figure how he's even getting a oil light to light up with what appears to be a broken sensor and no wire ?? Someone may have installed a oil sensor somewhere else on the tractor
this
My guess is the wire maybe touching metal and it will ground out and the light will come on. I believe there looks to be a BLK. wire also. And looks to be the same as the Blk. wire wrapped around the Radiator overflow Bottle. There maybe a sensor to read the water level?

I found my 336 wireing Dia. and it's showing Yellow to the Oil sending switch. the other blk? Thermo Start? or it could be water level. Nothing showing on for a water bottle though.
this

If it overheats in just 10 minutes the temp gauge may be bad.
this

This may be a stupid question, but...what exactly is the gauge measuring? The water temp in the radiator? The oil temp? Something else? I'm not even sure what to troubleshoot at this point...
water temperature in the block

If overheating that quickly I would check the thermostat. May be stuck closed.
does it have a thermostat?

that sounds normal. It will be to hot to touch for more than a few seconds. If it cools back down and you can feel the difference i am sure its not overheating. You need to get a new gauge you trust for it.

Sounds like the thermostat is opening. Parts drawing for it shown. Reference 3/3-1.

If the gauge red lined that top hose should be over 220F. Does it push any water into the overflow when the gauge is red lined?
