When its Just..... Too Hot

Good Afternoon Guys,
I thought everyone would get a kick out of my boredom, and not wanting to be outside when its 90 degs !

Sometime ago the second panel on my garage door started to rot out, probablly because my old dog would sometomes pee on the inside of the door when I had him in the garage !

I called Overhead Door and they came out only to let me know that they didnt make a 6 panel replacement panel anymore !

So this morning I headed down to HD and bought some materials to get started on this small project !

I bought Douglas Fir, 2x8 x 10'. Of course as you know that stuff is 1 1/2" thk. so we had to plane it down to 1 3/8".

I cut the boards on my chop saw to 9 ft, and then brought them down to my shop for further work. This is what I got done this afternoon.

I have the assembly dry fitted, and still need to make the panels, and cut up all the 1/4 rd stock to trim the panels out. I kind of ran out of steam at about 4:30 !

I don't think i've ever seen a wooden garage door down here either, only steel or aluminium. Is that for better thermal properties or some other reason?

That looks like a lot of work, Scotty. Wouldn't it have been just about as cheap and a lot less work to just replace the door with a metal door? I've helped put up both wooden and metal doors, and hope I never have to mess with a wooden one again.

Yep 90 is hot here ! To me anyway !

Bird, the problem with metal is that it wouldnt fit the character of the house very well. The house is a 3 bedroom colonial saltbox and metal just doesnt look right to me .

Anyways, Im kind of thrifty if you know what I mean !

While I sorta understand your point about a metal door not "looking" right, I always consider function, cost, convenience, etc. with appearance being way down my list of priorities.

Yep he was a 90 lb weimeraner named Fritz that could do no wrong, the rebuild isnt nearly as bad as losing him some number of years ago !

It's not so much the heat up this way as it is the humidity, temp reads 70 but it feels like 90. Break a sweat sleeping.

Scott, do you have torsion or extension springs? Be careful if tension is still on the door when you replace the section. 2 people and 2 pair of vice grips works great for holding the upper sections out of your way while you replace the bad one. BTW, the new section looks great. 12 years ago when I was in the business you could have ordered a section like that but you wouldn't have liked the price. I'm looking forward to the progress.

Yes I have torsion springs on both doors, and thanks for bringing that to my attention ! I have Overhead Door openers, so I was thinking I could unfasten that section and slip in the new panel if I can hold down the bottom section some how ! I was hopeful that I could slightly open the door with the opener and then stop it so I would just have enough room to put the new panel in !


Anyway, today I cut up the six panels fitted them in and glued up the entire assembly. I used that Gorrilla glue, its waterproof, but dont get it on your fingers ! It doesnt come off easily, and Im thinking I will have to wear it off !

I let the assembly dry and then just lightly sanded the joints. This afternoon I cut up the 1/4 rd stock and fitted them into the recesses. I have not glued the yet, or finish nailed them, I guess I will do that tommorrow !

I think it's all relative. High temps in one place must means that they can't handle cold weather in another place. When I lived in Cameroun, it would get down to the mid 60's in the winter months, and the locals would bundle up, wear beanies and cover themselves in blanket. They acted like the rest of us do when it's 40 and cooler out. Some were even shivering!!!!!

Figure out what the materials cost, add a little for your time and leave a flyer on their porch. Whatever you made off of it, it's money that you didn't have otherwise.

I absolutely hear you loud and clear on that !

My problem is that I have watched to many " Ice Road Trucker" shows and somehow think its glamorous to be driving a truck ! One winter of delivering oil should straighten me out on that line of thinking !

This mornin I glued and finish nailed in my 1/4 rd moulding pieces in. I took the panel up to the garage and put one coat of stain on it. Tommorrow I have to drive the oil truck so I probablly wont install the panel until saturday.

One thing I might point out is that when Overhead Door manufactured these panels, they used large shaper cutters for the rails and stiles, rather than the tongue and groove I used, this way they didnt have to make moulding pieces. That shaper set is quite expensive but the way to go for production !

Scotty, many years ago, I was repairing one of my two garage doors on my house. I had one panel about half-ripped apart to remove rotted wood. Suddenly a police cruiser pulled up in my driveway and a cop jumped out and instructed me to raise my hands and face the door. I did as instructed and he walked closer. He told me to take out my wallet and hand him my drivers license. When I did as instructed, he said I could relax. He apologized and said that when he saw me tearing into the garage, his first thought was that I was breaking into the house. When he saw my address on the license was the address we were at, he knew he had made a mistake. I told him he sure gave me a scare, but I appreciated his concern.

Jim, many years ago, when I as a young patrolman, in Dallas you could call the police if you were going to be out of town on vacation, etc. and a "service sheet" went into the "call book" in the patrol car assigned to that beat. The officer on each watch was supposed to try to get by and check the house, so it should have gotten checked 3 times a day. So once when I was working the evening watch, 3 p.m. to 11 p.m., I had a new service sheet showing the folks were going out of town early that morning. Well, I go by about 6:30 p.m. and there's a station wagon in the back end of the driveway with the back end of the station wagon open. I quietly checked the front door and it was not locked. So I very quietly slipped into the house, expecting to catch myself a burglar. As you've probably guessed by now, I found the owners in the bedroom packing suitcases. They had not gotten away as early as expected, but had not called the station to report the change in plans. I gave them quite a start, but they were glad to learn that we actually did check their house while they were gone. And unlike professor Gates, when I asked for ID, they willingly provided it and everyone was happy.

Scotty, I think you're on to the right track. Just remember that your opener doesn't usually do all the lifting, the springs do. If you disconnect the top sections away from the bottom two and activate the opener you might want to help it some by manually lifting as well. BEFORE you do that put those vice grips on the TOP side of the bottom rollers to keep the bottom sections from wanting to raise as well. Just remember the spring tension is set to raise the whole door which could easily weigh 300 lbs. Finally, your opener is probably set to lift a nominal weight so it may stall if it has to lift too much. Be careful and not strain yourself or shear the helical gear in the opener. After you raise the upper part some you can lock two more pair of vice grips on the track to hold the upper sections up while you replace the bad one. BTW, very nice job on the new section! I bet 'ol Norm Abrams would be proud!
