What’s the big deal? I use 15-20 tubes per month and maybe twice a year have an issue. Don’t use cheap grease guns and you’ll never have a problem

It’s a Milwaukee fuel 18v and a Dewalt 20 volt. Sure didn’t think they were cheap when I bought them.

I just upgraded from a manual gun to the Dewalt 20 volt gun earlier this year. I am SO grateful to the guy who put a video up on YouTube that shows the easy way to replace a cartridge in it. After pulling back the handle (which is VERY hard to pull, but maybe I'm just getting old), you don't unscrew the cap. Rather, unscrew the entire silver sleeve from the gun. Slide out the empty cartridge, slide in a new one, screw the sleeve back in, release the handle and Bob's your uncle.

Before watching the video, I struggled with getting the cap screwed back on. The spring would NOT stay compressed back neatly, so it made for a real battle to get the cap back on properly.

I am going to hire someone I really don’t like full time staff 24/7/365 and make them change the cartridges in my d—- grease guns.
What started out to be a quick grease of the quick attach pins this morning turned into a 2 hour ordeal involving two cordless grease guns, a manual one, 5000 paper towels, grease in my nose, and really coming close for the first time in throwing a tantrum for all to see!!!

Just went through the same thing. Got through all but one fitting and ran out of grease. Replaced the cartridge and couldn't get rid of the air lock. Went through more than a few rags and cycles of taking it all apart and putting it back together again.

I gladly am not into much volume of greasing. Mostly retired and cleaning up the old farm & maint a vacation place in mountains are about it. Soooo, even I get pizzed about the old never-the-same-twice but always ooze grease guns with plungers. I splurged for my birthday last year and picked up one
of those German cartridge guns. Thing of beauty -- absolutely no mess ever. Cartridges unscrew and new one screws back in. No grease on anything unintended. That combined with the overpriced lock-n-lube connector on the hose and it is hard to go wrong. Pricey guns and carts but oh so nice.

Greasing is the worst part of preventive maintenance. Between the grease cartridges--and yes, I'm old enought to have done it by hand--and frozen-up zerk fittings, along with a few other odds and ends that crop on occasion, I HATE IT!

I’ve always had trouble getting a manual grease gun started with a new cartridge. Never a problem with my Dewalt 18 volt

Yes, Air-Tec. Very happy with it (other than the price.) I predict that this type of cartridge gun will take over most of the hand-held grease gun market in the next few years. Once it does the price will dive. True, the lock-n-lube is not the best for tight spots but it is the difference between squirting grease all over the place 40% of the time and zero leaks once I get it on the zerk. I keep an old one around but rarely use anything but the lock-n-lube.

Um, no. If you have hundreds and they’re in all sorts of nasty places, it’s the farthest thing from relaxing.

You said something here that is profound: Sometimes when greasing I wonder if the design engineer ever thought through the maintenance process. That is. did they think about access holes/plates or the angle of the grease fitting?

I use the AirTec G200 lithium grease. I also use (in the older messy grease guns) Tractor Supply Lithium HD routine variety. I'm no connoisseur of lubricants. Use the Air Tec at the farm and the cheapy stuff at my 2 other locations with less equipment to service.

I purchased some parts to make a right angle accessory coupler to go with my Lock-N-Lube grease gun coupler (the best greasing coupler to come along in the last 100 years). What this does is gives me access using a right angle coupler to those two pesky zerks on my Kioti tractor, the brake...

I think changing cartridges is "kinda fun"
If you are not having fun, you are just doing it wrong,,

Unscrew the top of the cartridge holding tube.
Hold the cartridge holding tube in your left hand.
Grab the spring loaded handle that is protruding from the cartridge holding tube.
Pull the handle half way out, then SLOWLY let the handle back into the tube.
The paper cartridge should remain partially protruding.
NOW,, find a target,, specifically the guy you do not like at work.
Aim the cartridge holding tube pointed at that guy's clean shirt.
(it is best to change cartridges early in the morning, while that guy's shirt is REAL clean)

Now, pull the handle ALL the way back, the piston should drop out of the paper cartridge,,
Make sure the piston is out, if not release the handle partially, and pull again.

NOW with the holder aimed at a clean spot on that guy's shirt, ACCIDENTALLY release the handle,,
The empty cartridge will FLY OUT of the holder!!
If you are within 10 feet or so, that guy now has a nice grease donut printed on his clean shirt,,

Apologize,, and QUICKLY TURN AROUND, so that he does not see you snickering!!

Drop in a new tube, pop the cap, screw on the grease gun,
and, enjoy your actions the rest of the day,,
it will be tough getting rid of your smile, when you see the "grease circle" on his shirt!!

Heck, if you were using the "RIGHT GREASE",, (MOLY is good)
many times the grease circle will still be there three washings later,,

Your smile might last two weeks, or more, from ONE GREASE CARTRIDGE CHANGE!!

Some did not. Especially on driveshafts. They can be painful to access when you are trying to make a living and in a hurry. Some are thoughtfully placed, others can result in some nice skinned fingers.
My balers have grease “banks” where several zerks are grouped together with small plastic lines that run grease to hard to reach places.

I have posted this pic before BUT time to post again. Dump the expensive grease cartridges, which never really empty out, and move to a foot operated grease pump with 6 foot whip and locking grease nipple attachment. No power needed, 1-2 pumps per grease nipple, breaks thru dried up grease in nipples, saves massive amounts of time greasing, and buying bulk grease is much less expensive.

I too invested in the Dewalt 20v, LocknLube and the Grease Rejuvinator. Great tools. Work smarter, not harder.
