What\'s your favorite stuff?

Every generation has it's favorite stuff, mine is RTV I use it so much that my wife and kids have a running joke everytime I use or suggest the use of RTV. I guess it's poetic justice because we used to give my father the bussiness about his favorite stuff........tape,he just loved tape, his eyes would light-up at the sight of it,now I wonder what this generation will have for it's favorite stuff,I hope it's not Howard Stern...............Mike

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

I think I get the point here, maybe /w3tcompact/icons/hmm.gif

Here's a few things that I really like:
WD-40
Great-Stuff
5 min epoxy
Hot glue

There is something that really makes my eyes 'light-up'. /w3tcompact/icons/eyes.gif
Strangely enough, it's flashlights. I have dozens of them. When I find one that I like, I usually buy several and put some away unopened. My dad collects some strange things too. He has three compound bows, but has never gone hunting. He has forty fishing poles, but only fishes once a year. He also had about a hundred belt buckles in the 70's (probably still has them).

Rain-X
Quicken
Cordless drills (any brand)
Palm Pilot
Zip ties (wire ties)
Air nailers

Probably more but it I haven't had enough coffee yet.

Oh yea... coffee /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

It's basically a penetrating oil. Soak a rusty bolt with it and it's alomost guaranteed to come off. All the older tractor guys use it to free up stuck engines and the like. Any decent auto parts or hardware store should have it.

PS: Love the house. I'm in the process of restoring a 1877 farmhouse...

If I had to pick one thing I could not live without on a day to day basis it would be my Gerber.

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

Please fill me in on what RTV is. I should know, but nothing pops into my head. Radio? Television? combination? Repair tape? Hmmmm? The other listed materials are well known and on my list too.

As far as having a hard time resisting when I see them - old or new - are logging chains. I buy them, make them up, repair them, and have them hanging everywhere. Also, anything JD green. Love that color I guess.

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

First, what is RTV?

Here's my list;
Tri-Flow - a petroleum based version of WD-40 that's way better
Lock De-Icer
Gaviscon
Armor-All
Duct tape - 'Quando Omni Flunkus Moratati'
Electric winches (yes, I have more than one)
Makita cordless drill
Trailers (for hauling/towing, not for living/camping)
Chains & hooks - I have some grade 70's only 1' long I use all the time and others up to 30' long
Tie down straps with extra long, wide handles
My ugly, old, orange F-450 dump truck
Quicken Home & Business 99
Palm Pilot Vx
Dell notebook
HP printer/fax/copier/scanner
Convert-a-ball trailer hitch (and I used to laugh at them)
Leather gloves with extra long cuffs to keep my shirt/coat sleeves clean
Too many electrical outlets - in my truck, on my trailers, in my house, in my barn, anywhere
Power strips - those 6 outlet strips with the short cord

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

RTV is silicone gasket maker. comes in either toothpaste tube or a caulking tube if you need a lot. Put it a bead on in place of a gasket, let it set for about 15minutes or so, and bolt on whatever. instant gasket.
PB blaster is penetrating oil, a very good one. beats liquid wrench by a mile.

favorite stuff in no particular order:
Duct tape
3M electrical tape (more stretchy than the cheap stuff)
Body shop masking tape (3M green)
3M adhesive remover (stuff is amazing)
Laquer thinner
Zerorust
PB blaster
berryman's chem dip
carb cleaner
Castrol super clean
simple green
whitewall cleaner
zip ties (especially the giant HVAC ones)
anything cordless (including nail guns)
anything air powered
probably some stuff I forgot

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

Thanks for what turns out to have been just refreshing my memory, Scott. I've used RTV but never thought of the name of it. It's always been 'the blue gasket goo' to me. /w3tcompact/icons/blush.gif

Also, while it's no 3M adhesive remover, believe it or not I've had amazing results de-lettering trucks (taking old company logos off) with starting fluid. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this if you're a smoker, though. /w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Re: What\'s your favorite stuff?

RTV stands for "room tempature vulcanizing". Vulcanizing is the process used on natural rubber to harden it and make it more durable. It required heating the rubber and adding certain chemicals. When discovered, the different RTV mixtures didn't need heating for them to set up, hence the name "room tempature vulcanizing".
