That 70 yr old lady wanted to start welding a lumber rack on her truck.


I wouldn't want to be behind a lumber rack failure at highway speeds because someone new to welding made some pretty MIG welds.

I don't think she was assembling a rack from scratch... I took it as she needed to do a repair on a 'newly' acquired rack. And how thick is a typical lumber rack for a truck? More than what a 110v can handle?

I almost decided to not post anything in this thread. However because of the drivel that comes out of some folks mouths/finger and keyboards I will anyway.

I have not seen a single post by certain folks that has done anything other than reinforce the knowledge that they are just what I have thought they were from about the 4th post I saw them make.

The amazing thing about the internet is that it makes many folks more insular while it make others less so. It also allows bullies to continue with total impunity because it is the internet. In the real world a person has the opportunity to deal with a bully. There are many choices available some better than others. With the internet the bully is isolated and they stand with impunity. Then others like them can jump on the bandwagon and act like a pack of wild dogs. Think "Lord of the Flies", all instinct, no filters, no judgement, and a gross lack of maturity.

What seems to be missing on the " I have no idea what happened, why did this occur, what post caused this" is the fact that there are PM's that you never see unless the recipient or sender clues you in. Receiving vile statements, threats (even if they are ludicrous) and the like that are sent via PM because the sender knows that they will not be allowed in the public posts will make you wonder after a while why you ever participate in an activity that is supposed to be enjoyable. It takes time to research websites for reference to help someone out and then post it so that folks can use it as they wish. Why do it and spend time that you could be using to accomplish some task that is more enjoyable.

I have gone back to verify certain claims by some folks about what was or was not said and words that were or were not said and in the cases of the last several months I find that there are more bald face lies being made than a politician makes on the campaign trail. Just because you keep posting 100 times over that this was said does not make it so. It is an oft used tactic to say something over and over and eventually it will be believed to be true. Well it works, but as was said in a movie: "Stupid is as Stupid does" If you fall for such tactics you are the one that suffers.

The two Dave's are quite knowledgeable don't drive them away and stop the childish behavior.

Bzzzt! Sorry, wrong answer, try again. I have 100% access 24/7 to a dc stick machine, a big mig/ gas setup, and an even bigger dc stick/ Genny setup. I have the keys to the shop. Co I have worked at since 88 has that equipment. I've welded using all 3, sponges off their O/A bottles, and used their plasma cutter countless times. Center ramp fir ny big trailer, so I can haul trike tractors was built on that dc stick. Do I like it?, sure, it joins metal. My 235a xl ac Hobart stuck joins metal too. None of my stuff has fallen apart, including the first weld that ac machine made about 10 us ago, when a wing hinge broke on my 15' batwing mower and u had to glue the wing on, fabbing a new hinge and mounts. That mower runs weekly.

Your kind if response is exactly what I talking about. You assumed I've never run a dc machine, then made a (incorrectly based) statement that all would be revealed once I worshiped at the foot of a dc machine.

Sigh...

For some of us, our ac machines do 100% of what we need. We'd gain nothing by getting a dc machine, would only cost money.......... And do mo more work than we are already doing on ac.

I have to admit, I have a soft spot for the AC Lincoln "tombstone" buzzer. My first welding/fab job was for a cheap septic pumping/wrecker business and it was the only welder they had. I used that machine till I thought it would die but it never did.

I started my son with one even though we have DC machines in my shop - it's still one of his favorites. But our hands down fav is my 1963 Airco 300 stick/tig.

I still prefer AC for 7014 and 6013, but they run just fine on DC as well.
One thing I really do like about AC, as the amps increase and arc blow becomes an issue, AC fixes the problem

Probably 1/8" wall pipe, with 3/16 gussets. Agreed that a "repair" of a broken rack, is NOT a good "first project".

Harbor freight makes a very inexpensive pickup lumber rack that bolts together. It's $280, and adjusts to fit any pickup. Welding the joints (after bolting) it becomes a sturdy rack (or so I've read on the internets ). In any case, welding those bolted joints would be a good newbie project (that could go down the highway). Maybe this is what she's talking about as it seems to be a common modification on the internets (sort of a "repair").

He set a tone of ugliness that might take a couple weeks for folks to get it off their chest. It's an adjustment. He had knowledge and a willingness to help, which is essential in a forum, but the bullying, gathering others around for a pigpile, was not useful. Notice this mostly happened after he "left".

I actually thought he was "lightening up", was a little surprised he "left".

..... on one thread he was handing out them right and left and i actually saved screen shots. the bulk of that thread got pruned.

I will admit my method is just a tad bit more sophisticated and I have much better results. I started when a small group became rabid in their tactics several months ago. Due to my background it drives a curiosity that results in me analyzing a couple of posters and their patterns of behavior. Preventing the loss of content of questionable posts, if pruned, allows that.

That is why I used this sentence as I did in the above post: "I have gone back to verify certain claims by some folks about what was or was not said and words that were or were not said and in the cases of the last several months I find that.......................... "

I did lose a bit over 60 minutes a month ago however due to a failure and do not have specific posts for that short period.

You are part of the "me generation" in mind if not chronology, "all about me". Many folks come across on line much different than I think they feel they do. You should evaluate yourself but you have been told that before.

I read the last post he posted and knew immediately that he was done. No surprise at all to a careful reader of the English language.

When Shieldarc finally tried the AC side of his buzzbox, he was honest and admitted that they do OK, and showed pic's of it. He still preferred DC, as do most people. Arcweld has toned down his disdain for AC some, since Shieldarc's post. I haven't heard him call AC machines "boat anchors", "door stops", etc., in quite a while.

I believe Gary mentioned making a cotton wagon years ago with one. And it's still going strong.

I learned to weld on AC in our high school welding/fabricating class back in the '60s. We got very proficient at it, not only welding but also using the twin carbon arc torch. It was fun making projects, from chairs and tables, to boats (out of old car hoods).

I used DC for the next 40+ years, but after retiring from the RR, I bought an AC Thunderbolt and enjoy using it. I also own an inverter, a mig, and an O/A torch, but I still like welding with the buzzbox on occasion. And using the carbon arc torch for heating and brazing once in a while, is enjoyable. Everybody has their likes and dislikes, but saying that AC machines are trash is irresponsible.

Furu I missed that last squabble, all pruned, thankfully. Shield made his bed (often) and apparently got tired of laying in it.
BTW I post stuff to help members, show pics, make diagrams (which takes time!), answer quests as completely as I understand them. My intent is to make the forum a good place to find info. I'm sorry I'm not sure what you're up to here but you certainly put thought into it (and a few PMs!). Furu you could "lighten up" too, missing 60 minutes of forum traffic is probably a blessing.

I've continued a crusade to legalize 120v MIGs, against a very surprising opposition. I can't imagine one good reason that such a useful tool would be spurned, except by a few dinosaurs who haven't touched one since the '80s.

I consider discussion and learning, for example how to stretch the use of 120v MIGS a necessary activity on this hobby/maintenance tractor sub-forum. So may projects are well within their capability, and you come across an occasional bracket thats thicker than 1/4" then need some 'tricks' which are well-known to any veteran weldOR. And the vets should help, rather than cower from this tired old fear of trailer parts shedding on the freeway. 220v birdpoop can shed trailer parts too, is not the answer. A good weld is the answer.

Geez I've read from members who are afraid to use their MIG on their lawnmowers, and then are afraid to use the Buzzbox too because it will blow holes in their mower. Of course it will, and their MIG is their PERFECT tool for the job. Lots of horsepucky been tossed about here.

I don't regret stirring it up, and was looking forward to Shield's positive input with his 120 MIG.

that is ambigous.. to the casual reader.. looks like you might have said you were simply going back thru the board threas. who would know without explicit statements otherwise?

If you have solid, complete backups, that's great.

If you want the FULL picture.. you will need to have gone back a couple years though...

It's not pleasurable when you try to share years of experience and it's discounted because you did it for a living. Some people seem to think that doing it as fast and as cheap as possible is better than taking your time and doing it right. I guess that's what separates the people who take pride in their work.

I still have the Forney AC buzz box my dad bought for the farm in 1966 from the Snap On truck. Pretty sure it was around $230. Had a twin carbon arc torch with it and a plug in soldering iron.

Reverser was probably more proficient with his as I don't recall having too much fun with mine. The torch got tossed years ago in one of my clean up moods much to my regret.

That's a cool old Forney Big Barn

Here is one we have in the other building - it's an F225 and tig welds aluminum very well - nice soft arc.
It runs 6013 and 7014 really well.

Yep that's a miller HF-15-1. It works great and will throw a spark a foot long if cranked up too high.

It just has two input studs for ground and stinger, and two outputs for ground and tig torch.

I learned to tig with that box hooked to various welders and a year or so later bought my big Airco 300 tig/stick - 900 lbs of awesome
