I'm sad to see Shieldarc go but some of you guys need to understand that the guys working big iron or have worked big iron are a different breed but under the gruffness and what some take as insults are meant well and in humor even if it doesn't seem like it. I'm saying this because I've met a few big iron guys and thought they were complete A-Holes at first but once you understand them they are the nicest guys you will ever meet that will give you the shirt off their back.

Moral of the story is don't judge a book by the cover or even the first few chapters for that matter.

I dont follow all of the welding section much. So I am not "up" on everything that has transpired. But...correct me if I am wrong:

The root cause of all of this is he hated 120v welders. And thought that they werent useful beyond doing sheet metal auto-body type repairs.

And then he got one, and did some testing with it, and his quote was something like "these coupons look very good to me"???

While I didnt personally have any issues with shield arc, and have respect for his knowledge, I think soundguy said it best.
Shield didn't realize that every welding project out there doesn't have to be x-ray quality and done with a 1000-x$ gas mig with cnc setup.

Which makes it hard for someone with that much experience to come on a website like this where people are trying to learn and make their own repairs. Only way to get better is by trying. And if a weld fails, try it again until you get it right. You dont need $5000 welders and 4 years of schooling and 30 years experience to repair a busted piece of ugly farm equipment.

it's imature to insult people that don't own the equiment you approve of... that was a huge part of the issues.. if you look back of a few years of posts.

he didn't like your equipment.. he insulted you..... on one thread he was handing out them right and left and i actually saved screen shots. the bulk of that thread got pruned. Later on shield denied making some of the comments.. I pointed out i had screenshots in case he forgot... that earned me another few insults!

Last nite I was patching up my brush hog that I had torn up. I was jacking it with a comealong bar clamps clamps prying with a 2x4 and beating on it with a claw hammer cause I couldn't find the sledge hammer. I'm in a panic. I want to cut before it gets dark.

My wife comes out and stands there and I tell her watch out don't look while I weld. She wants to see my welds. I tell her no way. I'm patching this rusty junk up with some 6010 just tryin to get it done. So she walks over and looks when I stop. She said You make a livin doin that. Ah we're goin lose everything.

Talk about insults.

As we get older, we find out that the younger generation thinks we don't know diddely... Been that way since day one!

Another insult we have to get used to in our "Golden Years..."

Deal with it ..

I was enjoying SAs posts on using the 120v machine, the tests on 3/16, and looking forward to more. Lots to learn there.

I don't see "professional with great equipment" and "get er done with what you have" as exclusive things. Surely TBN has room for both perspectives. I respect both because I know I can learn from both. It is good when people with different outlooks work together on a problem.

I'm going to tell a story but it has a point. Once had a lawyer and a contracting agent who fought all the time. Didn't bother me, I needed both of them. Then they started badmouthing each other to clients. OK. I made them have lunch together once a week. Told them, I don't care if you just spit on each other, you gotta have lunch. Within 3 weeks they became more respectful and stopped bickering.

My point is, slinging electrons across the internet is not the best way to resolve differences. Some of the folks here are close enough they could arrange to meet and talk this stuff through face to face.

TBN is a place where the pros and the regular guys can talk together, that is worth preserving in the welding forum.

I've been welding for more than 40 years. Some jobs were 12 hours a day, 7 days a week. Some repair welding while the work is moving, some work hanging upside down from a harness. I've done MIG, Stick, and TIG. I've used 120v to big 1/16" wire Miller units. I do pretty good welding but there are ALWAYS better people out there for ANY job you think you are a pro at. Does it really matter if Shield stays or goes on TBN? It is JUST a internet forum....don't take things so serious. If someone bugs you, walk away for a while because it's not worth it. :drink:

The coments direct at me sfro shield were not a joke and were meant as insults. No question about it.

I will miss his skill and expertiese.... I will not miss 'him' as a person.

No reason to leave though... just practice avoidance.

I just learned that one of the most knowledgeable contributors on this forum has had enough and pulled the plug. I understand why he left and can't blame him for leaving. Haven't decided yet if I'll stick around. Seems there's a few people on here that don't think years of experience count for anything. Sad day at TBN. :smiley_aafz:

Arc I think years of experience DO count. I think berating without actual knowledge is what doesn't count. Not having any 120v MIG experience does NOT erase all that you do know, or make your input irrelevant on a welding forum. Posting such strong opinions prior to experience has stretched your credibility, but you don't have to do it that way in the future.

It would be great if you would take the time to do a bunch of test-plates with 120v MIGs and offer genuine experience. I bet you could offer years of assistance after a few short days goofing around with test plates. You will come up to speed hundreds of times faster than a normal guy. I guarantee that members will be interested in your discoveries of welding with lower power. You could learn something too.

As long as you are trying to succeed a 120v MIG, and show how to make them WORK. As opposed to the prior wisdom which was primarily stick-welders trying to "fail" 120v MIGs for some unknown reason.

I don't consider this a sad day at TBN, just a necessary adjustment. As you can see both you and Shield are valued here, and don't need to berate to get respect.

:laughing: I guess I am lucky... I don't think my wife knows the difference.

I just re read the entire 12 MIG welder thread started by Shield Arc, and to be honest, I cannot see what was the final straw that killed his enthusiasm. :confused3:

It seemed to be going better than normal and SA was about to crank it up on some thicker gauge material. I think this is what many of us wanted to see.
