Picked up this tractor about a year ago and am just now getting around to using it.

Anyone know what year and model it is? Can't seem to find any identifying numbers on it.

How hard is it to add power steering?

Where is the best place to get parts?

I can only get the tractor to start on starter fluid, could the maifold heaters be out?

Also, it smokes a good bit of lightly tinted blue smoke, oil burning I'm guessing. Common? Rings worn?

Well, it's a 1959 or later Ford because it has an SOS transmission. It could be a 2000, 3000, or 4000. It has an alternator, so I think it has been coverted to 12 vdc. Right now it is zero vdc because the battery is missing.;)

Look at this photo below. I made a red circle around the boss just behind the starter. If you clean that flat area off well, you will find the identifying numbers for your tractor.

Soundguy might see some other identifying features, but the SOS transmission means it is probably a mid-60s model.

Will this front loader I have work on the tractor? The front loader has it's own hydraulic pump that attaches to the front of the engine to run it. Can I plumb off of it's controls to run other hydraulic items?

These are the only numbers I could find.

Under the left foot rest the re is what appears to be hookups for hydraulics. Is this what that is?

as jim states.. since it is sos and since it is diesel, it has to be 59+

unfortunately on the diesels, the battery acid generally eats the sn and model id number off the bellhousing.

sheet metal, if original says it is an 01 series, and a 601 to be more precise.

thus it could be a 671 or 681 ( has hyds ).. depending on it's pto options.

you should be able to poke around on the sos and see if it is the 2 speed pto as it will have a selector on the casting .. if so.. 681.. if not.. 671

again.. assuming oem metal, and 671.. it's the slightly harder to find parts for 144ci diesel.. they are out there.. just have to find em then pay for them.

if it is in otherwise good condition and burning a lil oil and weak to start.. with parts prices as they are.. I'd be tempted to inves in a set of main and rod bearing shepps, new rings ( assuming lands aren't blown off the pistons from that start fluid ).. and a valve job.. even if only a hand lapping.. that and a new head gasket, oil pan gasket, and getting the thermostart working...

ps.. power steering from a donor 00/01 can be retrofitted to it.. or you can get an aftermarket unit from jackson power stering. since it has a front pump a priority valve could be used to feed the ps..etc..

None of those numbers look like the right number to me. Ford stamped the serial numbers into the boss behind the starter on either the left-hand side or the right hand side in later year models. Here is a link to the page that tells how to find them and interpret the numbers. I think your numbers may be obscured with rust where the battery dripped acid onto the engine boss. If you clean this area with some fine sand paper or a wire brush, they may appear, stamped into the boss.
