What to do with a pigeon that has moved in?

Thanks for all of the ideas and links. The result was, I didn't eat the bird, but I did locate it's owner. Apparently this bird was in an American Pigeon (something) Union "AU" race. This guy decided to stop about 52 miles from his intended destination and make a new home. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Anyway, I have to leave to head out to work now (and it's still dark), but the owner is going to drive down here to pick up his bird later today. I had to make no promises that it would still be here though. It's been here for about a week now, but it has been free to come and go as it pleases.

Now what?! I finally contacted the owner. He came down from 50 miles away to get his pigeon. She won't go to him. I don't know where she generally goes, but nearly every morning and every night, she is back here. Since the fella who owns her tried to practically club her with a fishing net to catch her, and threw a soccer ball at her when she was on my roof (trying to scare her off so she would go home), she is no longer able to be approached and hand fed.

Now, I probably cannot catch her without buying a cage of sort and trying to lure her into the cage with food over the course of time, and shutting the door with her in. However, the cage like that is $70, and I'm not spending that money to catch some bird to give back to someone.

Besides, some people thing that even if he does get her back, she will likely return to my house now. Any additional thoughts?! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Well if it was my pigeon at this point he would be doomed to no longer get fed by me and I certainly would not expect some one else to feed him. I would veryify that the owner no longer was interested in the bird and if not terminate the pigeon. A homing pigeon that doesn't return home has no value.

Let it live where it wants. It will find feed on its own, and it is not hurting anything. I would love it around here, we have lots of doves, hummers, wrens, finch, blue jays, starlings, robins.

Have you considered that this is an omen that you should join the homing pigeon club and start racing pigeons. You could send them to the Kubota dealer with a note every morning reminding them that your machine is not repaired. They can pin a note to the birds leg telling you were to go. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Feed the pigeon and learn that all living things that are free have the choice as to where they want to live. That bird has chosen you to be its new home. Reminds me that my grandparents helped out an injured pigeon once, let it rest in a room until a wing had healed. For the rest of his birdie life, the bird lived close to the house, and would fly above my grandparents convertible when they went to town. Hang out waiting on them. Then fly back home above them when they returned. They called him Turd Bird.
