Any direction as the T-head Gravelys pick up the oil from the tranny and pump it into the engine, High/Low planetary, and any excess goes to the front of the tranny. On early T-heads, the oil was also slung by the flywheels everywhere in the engine as they were wet sump and the oil filled the engine up to the level of the shifter rod holes for the rear planetary set. Later T-heads had holes at the bottom of the crankcase front to drain the oil back into the tranny.

Only problem with steep grades is the angle of the carb. More of a problem down hill than side of the hill.
