What tires should you get on a new Tractor, R1, R4, or Turf?

I don't understand the appeal to the hybrid tires. You will never get a tire that has more traction than an R1, is just as wide as an R4, but won't mark up your lawn.

Well, after tearing up her lawn with the R1s, I think my wife would disagree....

Then don't get on the lawn when its wet. :ROFLMAO:
Make sure to tell your wife that it's your lawn too. Let us know how that goes.

You know thats the funny thing about all these conversations. Its like some people buy the tires for a tractor based on the few times they feel they must drive it on a mushy lawn.

Even a small 25HP tractor should not be driven on a soft lawn.

It was not an impressive video for the Goodyear R14's, but no tire comparison video without a similar or the same tractor is going to provide much information.
They did dig down to dirt a couple of times.
As far as driving on a soft lawn heck I've got some ruts to smooth out when I can get on them from my Kubota F2000 almost getting stuck in my lawn last fall with the turf tires, ever since I had difficulty getting out of the lawn in 4wd with it there hasn't been a good time to fix them.

I have to use the tractor to pick up the heavy trees I dropped, even if I chop them up, its a bit much... Now using the JD 790 with Turf tires works fine, but no grapple, so would again have to pick up...yes I am getting old...

I agree with those who say R-1's will provide superior traction. They will also do a number at tearing up soggy ground - open field or your lawn. You CAN go beyond R-1's if need be - think tracks.

I am one of the people that said I will only use AG/R1 tires. The only time I have ever seen these tires do damage is in soft ground, usually in the spring when I have some wet spots. I'm pretty sure that a 2000# tractor is going to sink a bit in these places on my property no matter what tires I have on it.

The only other time I've seen them tare things up is turning sharply with my foot to the floor. I just avoid doing this by slowing down a bit or making a wider turn. But then I'm not in a race to get things done when I'm on my tractor.

Yes, if you have a lot of soft ground to deal with (or you in an indy race) and you're worried about damage then you probably don't want AG tires. But then again if you have a lot of soft ground and your worried about damage you probably don't want to be driving a tractor that weighs 2k to 4k pounds over it either.

Having only 10 hours on turf tires vs R4s, I am in the the second phase of of my four phases. So far, plowing without chains on a 1/4 mile drive with a slight incline, they are far superior in steering and traction. One storm was 14+ inches and no issues. R4s had rear chains only so steering was horrendous. Of course chains allowed me to go places I cant go with turfs alone, but that is rare. Next phase was Ice and they are adequate on ice, even with a slight incline. I had the chance to do a bit of Mud phase, and that is close to an absolute fail. But then the R4s without chains could be limited in a few muddy situations. Next will be dry or moist pasture rotary mowing.

I got R4's and personally I think they're the cat's meow. They don't load up with dirt and mud like turfs, they actually tear my grass up LESS then the turfs mounted on my zero-turn, and I will go on record to say that those who ***** about them in snow DON'T KNOW HOW TO USE 4WD AND LOCKING DIFF!
Thats not the reason and a rather ludicrous statement that a person w a 4wd tractor, doesn't know how to use the 4wd as if there is a technique to place it in 4wd. Also, the locking diff is there for sporadic use when needed .
It has more to do with the tread spacing on particular R4's, size and weight of the tractor, tire pressure and the size of the R4's themselves, type of snow (wet/dry), weighted or not and terrain of the individuals property.
I have a friend with a large frame tractor who logs with his R4's in 12" of snow. Little problem. I have another friend with a JD 3720 whose R4's give him conniptions in snow.
It is not the tire designation as much as the details and properties of such.
