What size chain binders and chains?

/ What size chain binders and chains? #21
When I bought my farm and tractor, I bought all new G70 5/16" chains and lever binders. After using the lever binders a couple times, I wish I had stayed with the ratchet binders instead. While the ratchet binders are slower, I like their adjust ability and ability to really *safely* tighten down the chains vs. the "all or nothing" aspect of the lever binders.

Even though the directions that came with the lever binders say to never use a "cheater" bar, I use one just so I doesn't take as much force to close and/or open them for the same binding force and I can open them a lot more safely when they're under pressure.

The Lever style binders are now illegal in South Carolina and DOT will fine you 400 per lever style binder used to secure your load. I got this information from a DOT officer that I ran into and ended up talking to for over and hour, real cool guy. I run 5/16 truckers grade chain with the DOT stamps in chain every four links to be safe and i have ratchet style binders i use on my gooseneck. They are now DOT approved ratchet straps made to secure tractors my father in law picked some up when I wend and picked up his new LS tractor for him.
