I have a Massey 165(1967) and wonder what size box blade it will handle. I have plans for a couple blades but don't know what to build. My tractor is about 6'4" outside the rear wheels. Any ideas????

Should be sufficient weight and horsepower (especially if you have the Perkins) for a six and a half footer. It'll cover your tire tracks too. Don't know if they're still making them, but Bush Hog and LandPride used to sell 78 inchers.

Good Evenin Fordman,
I agree with Greg, that tractor has enough of HP to pull a 78" boxblade if you have good rear tires. You might even get away with a 7 ft blade ! ;)

A seven footer will not be a problem for a 165 -- my anemic gas 135 will pull a six footer:p and you want the blade outside the wheels

Thanks guys I will go with the 78". The plans I have are only for a 4' and 5' using 1/4 plate. I know I can use these designs to go bigger but should I go to 3/8 plate or just beef the back and ripper section up a bit.:D:D

1/4"??? for a 78" box? You should go to 1/2" construction for all parts. Especially for middle of box front to back support. There is a lot of span from end to end and it will bend when you hit that first large rock or root if you don't. Study your plans then inspect industrial boxes and see how they differ and select design elements that you want.

Sage advice from John, sounds like he's already "been there, done that". My first BB underwhelmed me, I felt like I was supporting the local fabrication shop. So when it came time to replace it, I already knew some of the structural weaknesses to avoid.

The recommendation that tops my list, is to fabricate the beefiest lift frame possible. This is the type I have on my current BB. Haven't hit anything that could bend it yet......
