Now Holland TN 65D with Cab
We recently had a thread about the confusion on what oil filter to use in New Holland tractors. It seems getting a non-OEM filter to match the OEM filter was confusing. It was also told about the ever changing oil filter numbers for New Holland tractors. It is also now confusing about the correct oil to use. When I bought my TN65D new back in 2004 I was told that NH 15w40 was the oil to use in my tractor year around. I did so till this year. Now, Its impossible to buy a 5 gal bucket of NH 15w40 oil at my NH dealer. They only sell NH 5w30 in 5 gallon buckets and say it the oil for my tractor. What is the deal? PS they said they can still get NH 15w40 in quart containers, but its priced at 3x the cost of buying it by the 5 gal. bucket! Is this another NH way of maximizing profit for its OEM(outrageously expensive maintenance) products?

Not having 15W-40 available in 5 gallon pails has nothing to do with New Holland and everything to do with what your local New Holland dealer chooses to stock. Oil in small packages ALWAYS costs more per unit than the same product in larger packaging although frankly I doubt the difference is a factor of 3.

Read your operator's manual and buy engine oil meeting the viscosity and API specifications listed for your tractor. It really isn't all that difficult.

RickB, I have to admit you must be right. It might not be a NH issue about the unavailability of the NH 15W40 oil in 5 gal. buckets at my local dealer. He has decided to not carry it in buckets. My major question is still why the change from 15w40 for all year around use to 5W30? Is it just my dealer that is changing the recommended oil? Has it been determined that the 5W30 works better in the NH TNs than the 15W40 oil? Checking the specs will not tell me why the change. Maybe you are right again! Its not that hard to figure out- the 5W30 must be cheaper to buy for the dealer!

Anybody else have a TN series tractor? Do you use the 15w40 oil or the 5w30 for year around use? Has your dealer changed the recomendation or availablility of your engine oil? I have always used the NH fluids and filters simply because I don't want to take a chance of damaging my engine to save a couple of dollars. This changing of oil weight I don't see as much of a big deal except I'm just curious to see if its just my dealer or other dealers as well. Maybe NH or just my dealer determined it will allow the engine to start and warmup faster in cold weather? Thanks for everyones thoughts! Merry Christmas! Ken

I hope you get input from others on this. I can tell you that we recommend 15W-40 for TN's and we do not stock 5W-30. Our climatic conditions are probably very similar.

You need to get to know your local fuel/oil supplier. The jobber that delivers my diesel fuel also has Exxon/Mobil lubricants. I buy the 15w-40 Exxon XD-3 diesel oil by the drum. It costs about $7 per gallon. I use it in all three of my tractors, my two diesel pickups, and the Kenworth.
I also buy my tube grease, hydraulic oil, gear oil, anti-freeze, etc. from them. It's cheaper than any dealer or auto parts store, plus they have the larger containers. (gallon, 5 gallon, drum)

With the heinz57 of tractors on our yard buying the dealer oil for each one would be impossible. Ford,JD,CAT,IH,Case,Valtra,MF,leyland, renault, fiat, same, komatsu etc so we've always gone for the best deal on 45 gal drums of decent 15-40 but recently i find our local NH can match anyone for price and better most ?
And castrol grease from wally mart if you want crates of it they will deal :)
