Sassafras albidum

ditto....It's kind of big for sassafras though....

Is it light weight and somewhat soft?

I have some 20" sassafras on our property. I split 1/2 a cord a couple months ago. It is very straight grained and splits easily with a POP. I was able to shear huge thin slabs off the outside and use them bark side up for the top row of my firewood pile.

Any idea what kind of wood this is? I cut the tree down a year or so ago. It was growing in a wetter area of my property that has some hardwoods in it.

Were the small branches at the ends kind of orange colored bark? The dead twigs should snap easily. They can be lit with a match and are great for kindling. The leave should look like this:

JB4310 got it right, it's an Austrian Pine.

Sassafras should have a strong smell if that was it.

the bark looks like Scotch or Australian pine, the wood in the Scotch is very orange looking. smaller needles also usually not much more than 12~14" at butt. The sassafras usually will smooth out more as they go up as far as bark roughness and will have a very root beer smell when you work them, it also has a somewhat orange-ish tinge to it. both split rather well, the pines will have a lot more small branches and needles the sassafras with have leaves like posted above. (look like mittens.) but otherwise very tree like. the smaller ones will have a lot of green & orange color to the bark and seed down pretty well

I vote for Austrian Pine but it's not a "for sure". Are there any others left like it? If so, how many needles in a cluster? Was it very straight? (Scots or Scotch pines are not usually straight).

Pine for sure though.

Since he said he does not remember any pine trees in that area, you would think he would remember cutting down a pine, wouldn't you?
