the bark looks like Scotch or Australian pine, the wood in the Scotch is very orange looking. smaller needles also usually not much more than 12~14" at butt. The sassafras usually will smooth out more as they go up as far as bark roughness and will have a very root beer smell when you work them, it also has a somewhat orange-ish tinge to it. both split rather well, the pines will have a lot more small branches and needles the sassafras with have leaves like posted above. (look like mittens.) but otherwise very tree like. the smaller ones will have a lot of green & orange color to the bark and seed down pretty well
