The keyboard...
Who came up with the bright idea to mix up all the letters?

Back in the last century the mainframe we were on at work had the ability to remap the keyboard via the login procedure (a macro), so I did so for about a half-dozen guys - laid out their keyboards in alphabetical order. When we migrated to PC LAN-based ERP software as part of the Y2K transition that ability went away. There sure was a lot of teeth gnashing and caterwauling from those guys.

I'd put it in the same category as calling vegetables "veggies" or mayonnaise "mayo". More annoying modern slang than peeve.

Calling a shotgun a "shotty" makes my skin crawl.

Why? You don't call a rifle a rifey or a pistol a pisty. And it's not like you're saving syllables.

The QWERTY keyboard layout is actually extremely efficient. The typing class (before they called it "keyboarding") I took in high school paid dividends my entire life. The bonus was it was back in the day when typing was seen as a female career so the class was full of chicks.
Same... did "typing" class in HS, because I could see it would be useful, and because it was always full of cute girls. The story I got on the QWERTY keyboard was that it was a compromise between:

1. Putting most-used keys in home-row, less used keys farther out
2. Keeping key combinations used sequentially (eg. "qu", "th", "wh", "er", etc.) away from each other to avoid hammer jams

Remember, each key struck a hammer on a ribbon in the old days, and there was no easy or practical way to introduce artificial delay in a purely mechanical machine.

I can still type faster than I can write or speak, but not as fast as I was in college, when the fingers were younger and nimbler.

Another pet peeve I encountered today a couple of times are websites that almost immediately after the main page loads, a big popup appears wanting you to sign up for their mailing list or open an account to get "Unbelievable Deals."
They haven't got a clue as to how many people it pisses off.

I always close that gimme your email and phone thing... figure I can find later if I actually want to buy something.
I was forced into a typing class but I cheated, peeked down at my fingers constantly and didn't use what little I learned for 30 yrs as a carpenter... :p Then one day I tried to type  crap.

Why are people so incompetent at simple things.
I had not been to a Taco Time for a while. But today, I wanted two crisp MEAT burritos. For personal reasons, I NEEDED two crisp meat burritos. It was my gift to my self for a hard day.
Got home, and they are BEAN burritos. And they are in the meat burrito sleeves. And I was charged for the meat ones.

I wonder..... They just had a very limited job to get it right, and yet they failed. And it was important to me, to get the Crisp Meat, cause that was my treat for the day.

What's worse is that popup/adblockers don't seem to block them.

Am I the only one who backs out and goes to another vendor if they can't control their popups? For a long time I had a 4 popup limit, but realized I was being too patient.

The QWERTY keyboard layout is actually extremely efficient.
According to every report I've ever read, AND according to personal experience that backs it up, the QWERTY key "board" was designed to be as INefficient as possible.

The reason was the original mechanical typewriter. Keys that were too close together, when operated by an experienced operator, could result in jammed keys. Even though I'm not THAT old, I have experienced that even with the QWERTY layout...

August Dvorack developed a much more efficient keyboard but it never took off. With current voice recognition and AI interpretation, it will probably never become mainstream, unfortunately.

OK, maybe I don't understand "pet peeve". I guess it centers around different interpretations of "pet" since "peeve" is pretty objective.

I know people with No pets, Two pets, Three pets, and shall we say Many pets.

Count me among the ones with Many.

Another few:
  • Changing lanes without blinkers
  • Driving in the center (of three) or left (of two or more) lanes at a speed lower than the observed average. Exacerbated when there are 3 or more lanes and there is a "Trucks, buses and trailers restricted from the left lane" and it is a Truck, Bus or Trailer(ed) vehicle.
  • People that use apostraphes inappropriately, i.e. to "make" something Plural.
  • People that use nonsensical words/phrases such as "round circle" (and a bazillion other redundancies), "irregardless", etc.
  • References to performance mods as being "Stage 1", "Stage 2", et cetera when there is no accepted definition of such.
  • The use of any superlative when discussing objectives. For instance Best restaurant. Really - so you would go nowhere else unless you had to...
Never mind, I'm a critical person. Given a day or three I could write a treatise on what peeves me. And I understand that what peeves ME has no effect on the general population. So I tend to try and forget about it until one thing raises its ugly head so high I just can't ignore it.
