Peeve: “Have it your way.” If I have to design my own sandwich or figure out the best pairing of sides, then what the hell am I paying the chef for? Any idiot can cook and assemble a meal.
This is one gripe I hear from Europeans who visit us here, and I have to agree with them. Whether it’s a simple sandwich shop or a gourmet restaurant, I expect the chef or “sandwich artist” to know their craft better than me, just a random idiot walking in off the street.
I worked next to a sandwich shop in my early 20’s, and would grab lunch there a few times per week. After specifying several less than spectacular sandwiches of my own, I just started telling the ladies that worked there, “put whatever you would like on it.” My sandwiches were infinitely better, after that.
Short of food allergies, let the experts exercise their craft. You will be pleasantly surprised, more often than not.
