Buying Advice What does the JD model number system

Can someone direct me to any previous discussion of what the JD numbering system means? I was at an auction today and the prices and model numbers are all over the place. There doesn't seem to be a direct relationship between HP and model number like there is with Kubota. I just want an easy way to quickly evaluate a tractor so know if it is one in my range or not.

I went to tractordata.com, choose JD. You can view by model numbers, year of mfg, hp or series. You can see a little bit of relation to hp in some of the model numbers. I saw a relation to the first number and the letter on the end. But I'm just guessing.

thanks. I knew i couldn't have been the first to have been confused and frustrated by their model numbers.
