What Do You Do With Your Waste Oil?

Our state has that law too and collects a deposit on new oil sold. Never found a place that gives a deposit back. Called numerous state offices to get the story and people were either on vacation or never heard of it.
Fortunately the county furnished a tank at a local and only hardware store so people would not just dump it in the bushes. I had a waste oil heater before and it was an early model with a built in tank, new ones are much better. I am going to get one when I get the wood supply reduced to a safer level on my property.

It May sound a bit odd, but my neighbor taught me this. We use it to seal the wood fence between our houses. Even with dirty, used motor oil, it works great and does not change the look of the fencing.

There is a little known law in my state that says if a business sells motor or hydraulic oil, they must also accept used oil for recycling. The law is never enforced.

My tractors generate around 15 gallons of motor & hydraulic oil per year. When I bring the used stuff to the place where I bought the new oil and ask them to take it, they look at me like I had two heads. No one will accept it. Sure, I use some for lubing machinery but there is always a whole lot left over.

Years ago, when I bought my first tractor, the dealer heated his building with waste oil. He had a tank beside the building where customers could leave their used oil. He eventually had to take it out because people were dumping all sorts of crap in it. Used anti freeze was the biggest problem since it caused damage to his burner.

When I worked for the local telephone company, I made friends with the truck mechanic. He let me dump my oil in his recycle tank which was collected monthly by a recycling company.

Now that I'm retired and have several tractors, the problem is worse than ever. I'm storing my used oil in an old 275 gallon fuel oil tank but it's almost full.

Considering the cost of new oil these days, there must be a market for the used stuff. I don't generate enough to warrant spending big bucks on a waste oil heater. I'm curious what others here do with their used tractor oil??
I wish you lived close by, I added a waste oil burner to my foundry furnace since it causes less metal contamination in the melt, but i can never get enough oil :) I've actually used diesel from my tractors fuel container in a pinch.

I use some to oil the wood decks on my trailers & roller chains on equipment.

I work for a place that refines used oil back into a base oil. We have free drop off for small amounts.
Safety-Kleen should take it if you have one around. Or check with an auto parts store. Your township may have options as well.

That's what I have done with the mailbox post I made out of maple and some other outdoor things made out of wood. Of course, that doesn't take much... :) But a plus of doing this is it can throws environmentalists into a tizzy ("it's recycling... but it's bad").

Yep, in NY auto parts store will take it, but some only will take 5 gallons at a time, depending on who is working there.....so come back tomorrow, make two trips instead of one to bring the same amount in the end.
For some reason I often seem to trip while carrying the old oil to my truck and spill ALOT of it on my brush pile.
Much safer than spilling gas and cheaper than spilling diesel.

I remember that Delaware had a law on the books for used oil and recyclable beverage containers requiring the seller of said products to accept them for recycling. Both were poorly enforced and businesses made it difficult for you to do it. Businesses that had the facilities to accept waste oil had to pay to get rid of it. Auto parts stores that didn't have a connected repair shop like Pep Boys didn't even have the facility for that. The state gave up on both systems.

There are still locations where you can pour your waste oil into collection tanks at solid waste transfer stations. Same for what is not single stream recycling. Not nearly as many locations as there were when I moved here 30 years ago. They used to be within walking distance of most of the population back when you sorted your recycling. There are collection events in different parts of the State each month for oil and other toxic waste. I have collected about 50 gallons of waste oil on my property that's been waiting for me to load it up and take it to the nearest transfer station.

I use it to start wood fires ( mixed with a little gas ) as they can be difficult to get going .
Local council have a collection point , but stores in Australia don't provide a service .

I'm not leaving my containers.
Curiously, why not? When I do an oil change I just pour the used oil back into the jugs the new oil came in. The drop-off places don't want the empties, and really neither do I.
As for auto parts stores, most of the ones around here are stand-alone, ie-don't do any sort of service work, but there is an O'Reillys that does do tires, oil changes, etc. That's where I bring mine. I suppose legally the others have to but I've never asked.
