Living close to the Mickey Mouse farm, we choose to go out of state on vacation. Next week I am going with some friends to Perry, GA for an Amish auction. Should be a good time. It will only be 3 days, but for me that is a vacation.

So what does everyone else do?

The red head I've been putting up with...errrh...uhhh... been married to for 37 years tries to drag me off somewhere for 3 or 4 days, but it's like pulling teeth. She love the beach...but, I was in the Navy for 4 years and had plenty of sand and salt water to last me for the rest of my life. She can usually convince (whine) me into doing something every other year or so. Fortunately she does have a good friend that has a beach house down at gulf shores and goes there with her 3 or 4 times a year for a "girls" trip with her buddies. She does put up with me and my "toys" so I can't complain too much. I just don't care to be around crowds or tourists or not sleeping in my own bed. I guess with 71 acres that I have plenty to do to keep me busy anyway. I think I just like home the most. My youngest son just moved to be a manager at a resort in North Carolina and she was complaining about missing her baby.....so, I see a trip (12 hours from here) soon to pacify her. Ugh. Mama just doesn't ever let go of her babies. :(

One needs about 2 weeks to really decompress. I thought it was the Japanese who had to be taught how to relax but coming to the conclusion that it is a very common lifestyle issue here in the US too. I try to go on camping trips in the Rockies. 18 hours driving there + 18 hours driving back. 2 weeks worth is about the least time that makes sense. Done the same thing driving from MI to the Florida Keys. 24 hrs worth of driving. One can rent a home there for less money than towing an RV and paying for fuel.

That's kind of funny, seems everyone from Florida heads north for vacation, we go south to Florida for two weeks every year! The wife loves the beaches and seafood. Her sister lives down there where we go and she also heads north for vacation.

We also like camping in the mountains for a week or two in the fall, plus whenever her schedule gives her four straight days off, we like to drag the camper to some out of the way campground just to get away for a bit

My wife loves the beach. She never saw it until we married and took our first vacation there. We camped with family vacations to the beach over the 4th of July for over 20 years. That was the only vacation time we had available and it was not relaxing. Now we have sold the camper and trek to the beach in the spring and fall during less busy times.

Living in the country, listening to the birds sing, tinkering with all my toys, while listening to country music on a good stereo is my type of vacation. I also enjoy the river, and going on nice drives thru the country with my nice cars.
The older I get , the less risks I want to take, so I enjoy staying near home.
I,ve seem lots of the world, luckily long ago, before things got out of hand, and consider myself very lucky for the miles I have flown and roads I have travelled, to not have had any major issues or problems.
I really do enjoy sleeping in my own bed, every night.

We have our vacation every day that it is not to cold, we get something to drink, she coffee me water and sit on the back porch and talk, watch the neighbors cows, look at the differences in the trees on the hill, watch the birds and other critters. I know it is a pretty action packed time but that is how we like it. We sometimes even carry out a snack. We have been doing this for almost 10 years and we still enjoy it.

We take a trip with friends every other year. Typically somewhere in Central America. Wife and friends insist on being on the beach. I get too bored too quickly. I typically take my laptop so I can work a few hours a day to stay current. I prefer an active vacation. Best trips I have taken were sailing trips in the Keys and Bahamas, and cycling tours through the Colorado Rockies.

What's a vacation??

I have never really taken a vacation of more than 3 days. Having worked on every continent but Asia and Antarctica, I got to see the major places of interest and really have no desire to travel any more. My vacation is to sit at home and watch the wild life from my back patio, take my Goldwing motorcycle for a short ride or take my boat to the lake for a fishing trip. None of these get me much more than 50 miles from home.
About twice a year, the wife and I would make a trip to Houston to see all the grandchildren, but after about 2-3 days, we are ready for a sleep in our own bed again.
We do enjoy entertaining visitors and welcome friends and kin to visit which they seem to enjoy since the come back frequently to visit "the farm" .

Prior to having a baby and moving out to the country, I used all my vacation time to ski. Many day trips, but also 1-2 weeks at Alta, Utah, which is my favorite place to ski on earth. Now with a baby and living in the country, I use all my vacation just time to stay caught up with life! And I'm having fun, so it's all good. It helps that we moved to a waterfront location, where I can mix in fishing, crabbing, and boat rides once and a while, for some fun. Actually though, I felt more like a waterman while working my crab pots last year (a bit of a dirty business) so that is probably a wash in terms of work/leisure, but they taste good. Looking forward to hitting the Stripers when that season opens in 2 weeks. If I could only use vacation time to tend to family, chores, and a little bit of enjoying my location as I get older, I'd still feel pretty lucky. Beats sitting behind my desk at work!

westcliffe, you're (note, not "your") right. I've noticed after two weeks, a change comes over my body! I've been able to do that a few times in my long life, enough to notice it. Been way too long now though, and I'm a geezer now. Kind of semi-retired, but still need a long vacation...

Oh, right, what do we do? Usually go to beach a few days, but can only afford about 2-3 days there. My favorite thing is take our trailer to lake or mountains and fish, have camp fire, just be in nature.

Every few years, its off to the Philippines to visit family and sight see. Those round trip tickets cost an arm and a leg. Still thinking of retirement in the Philippines when the wife gets closer to retirement age. I like the place and its cheap!

Mark, I agree with the idea of retiring in PI, or somewhere overseas. Can live like a king on gubmint check. Been to Philippines many times, could live there. Cebu is my favorite area that I've been to. If flights were so expensive, it'd be a great place to vacation!

When I lived in CA, I went on a hunting trip every year for vacation. At the time, I didn't realize it, but I wasn't happy where I lived and those trips where my way of escaping where I was at. Then when I moved to TX and bought some land in 2003 I didn't take another vacation for ten years. I realized that I just didn't want to go anywhere else. When I met Karen a few years ago, we got to talking about all the places in the world we wanted to see and experience, so we started taking a trip or two every year. We really like going on cruises. They are fun and there it's nice not dealing with anything once you are on the ship. Just wake up and you are somewhere new!! We've also done a few road trips through the Rockies to take pictures of wildlife and scenery. I think there will be a lot more trips like that in our future. Yellowstone is always amazing, but there are so many other places that I've only seen pictures of that we want to see in person. We've done one hunting trip together and that was also amazing. We spent almost a month in South Africa and we will be back for sure. Our next big hunting trip will probably be to Alaska. I've been three times, but Karen has never been there. I like going to the beach for about an hour, then I'm bored with it. I don't like too much relaxing, it wears me out. I like to go somewhere that I can explore, see new things, try new foods and get a small sample of what it's like there. I've lived overseas in the Marine Corps. 14 months in Cameroon, and 16 months in Indonesia. I've been to a total of 35 countries in the world and there are still at least that many more that I want to see. This year we have decided not to go anywhere while Karen finishes off her PhD in Nursing. That should happen in December, so the odds are good that we will take another cruise next winter.

A Caribbean cruise is a wonderful way to spend a week. Being on the ship and watching the water is relaxing, the food is wonderful and plentiful, the entertainment good, and the U.S. Virgin Islands are breathtakingly beautiful.

Table Rock lake in Missouri for 7 days every summer. Other side trips will include float trips, Mt. Rushmore, and fishing / camping trips to smaller lakes. Vacations are what I live for.

Week long vacations only happen every 2-3 years. Now 2-4 day trips happen 1-2 times a year.

We like the smokies but I did take her to the beach one year in Florida. First time she had seen the ocean. We've also camped at LBL but she's not into camping like I am.

I keep wanting to see the Rockies and northwestern plains. But that's a 2 week minimum.
