What do you charge for your services?

I have wondered about just charging my hourly rate for transport time. Diesel for this peterbilt is killing me.

I have thought about that, but it is a bit of a hard sell. I think everyone sees you running through the drive-through and stopping to gas up on their nickel.

What sort of contracts and insurance do you folks use. I have had a couple of neighbors ask if I would do work for them after my great yard grading, but I am worried about liability.

im employed in this type of work and i run into the situations like yourself all the time. Im not self employed however. I do many jobs on the side excavating for friends and neighbors that require excavating or grading. I do not use contracts or insurance on side jobs. If your going to do side jobs or favors, I encourage you to pass on jobs that you may feel the s.h.it. will hit the fan. My jobs are usually just overall site improvement or drainage. I will make the necessary "one call" to ensure there are no underground utilities and then go at it. Most of the time these jobs are of no real profit and are favors. If your going in it for profit, you may want to look into insurance and contracts becuase you will be held liable if something isnt right. If your worried about hitting someones house or car with a dozer, then maybe the job is something you should pass on. Other than that, you shouldnt worry too much about utilties if you made the one call to the county.

You must not have been doing it right! I would think that someone that had a large tool and was experienced working it could charge what they wanted!

You have to charge what your worth or you become what you charge.

The first time you "see" or "get" a job is the best it ever gets.

The folks that pay the least will complain the most and will never send you any future business or make referrals for you.

A satisfied customer is one who received good value for the services he paid for and would gladly pay the same again for the services rendered.

There is no such thing as a perfect job, but getting close enough to perfect to satisfy the consumer is what is required. Be willing to listen, and discuss with realistic advice and counsel what a job will require with any customer.
