A friend wants me to cut his 4 Way wedge so it is just a single. Is it ok to just use the torch?

I also need to re-weld the single wedge to the frame. Whats the best way to do this? Preheat to cherry red...then....?? Whats the best electrode to use?

Any suggestions would be great help.

I'm a pretty good welder, been schooled and all, just need some more advise for this here. Dont want the weld to break for this guy.

Thanks

I'm not exactly sure what type of steel it is. I was hoping maybe you guys would have an idea. Is there a steel that is most used for wedges?

I got tired of squishing home made wedges and bought three of the ones you smack with a maul and welded them one on top of the other. I used fresh 7018 at around 140 amps and they have never come loose....I'm surprised too.

Most wedges are standard low carbon steel, that is what mine is. We welded it on at 150 amps DC+ with 7018 rods, three passes.

James at PJ commercial products sells a hardened wedge, it costs 32 dollars an inch, so a ten inch wedge would be 320 bucks... And welding it on would require somebody who knows what they are doing. (like not me...)

Good luck

I would weld the first pass with E6011 that is a deep penetrating rod.
Clean up the slag. I mean really get rid of the slag!
Finish it with E7018 two or three more passes. That should hold for a good long time.

The reason I didn't use 6011 for the root was the unknown composition of the wedges....

7018 is deep penetrating itself, you do want the amps cranked up with 1/8" min rod.

I like the idea of the 3 wedges stacked together, quick poor-man's fix.

On stacking the wedges....I took them to the grinder and removed some of the "flare" at the tip and stepped them so the top ones were closer to the ram. It was a cheap solution....and I'm really suprised that none of them flew off into the beans. Corn wouldn't have been too bad....but with beans..I never would have found them!!

my wedge was a "hardened steel" composition, and 7018 was recommended. torch in one hand, stinger in the other, i welded it on there . i am confident it will never, ever, breaK off.
