I don't have a digital camera with a flash.
I did try looking at the sun.
I put my hand over the lense and could see my hand thru it.
When I moved my hand it went dark for a second
then back to clear again.
The sun wasn't bright enough to keep it dark.
So I think it works, just would like to be sure before welding.

Too hot for me to get out during the day.
And I keep running out of daylight in the evenings.

PoohBear,

The filter should stay dark looking at the sun. Check to see if the sensitivity adjustment is set high enough. Also, most of the filters use a solar cell to charge the battery, it is possible it is not fully charged. Mine will do the same if it is left in the dark for an extended period of time. Try leaving it face up in the daylight for an hour or so.

I took the welder out to the shed today and tried it out.
Used a 1/16 rod at 35 amps and ran a bead across a piece of steel.
It worked great. Can't wait to try higher amps.

The helmet seemed to work ok.
Probably will put a new battery in it just to be safe.

Now I gotta set up an area for welding and find a project.
