In my experience, the cotter ring is the first thing to get destroyed when working in brush. I change them out, quickly. :)

i have something similar to that on the lower arms ... except they have an extra turn and the bit that goes in the middle there straightens out and goes all the way across

After loosing the stock ones, then the lock ones, I now use lock wire in addition to the lock rings; especially on the pins you don't ever remove in the field. That and I still carry a variety of pins with me.

and that's the ansewr.. :) use a good pin.. and carry some backups! and get in the habbit of checking now and then.. or get a good feel for your machine so you know when it is riding wrong..

I check everything in the morning, I walk around check for grease on the bottom of the bushhog (leaking output seal) and my 3 pt linkage.

It's a matter of getting used too, better to catch things early.
