Ballast want get rid of calcium in tires

Well ----- I am 74 and have NEVER taken tires to dealers, fix-um myself---- have for years. Nuttin to it, just a lot of hard work.
As for the crap liquid in them---- not a problem to get rid of!!! lol!
Dont be intimidated by big tires ---- they are a piece of cake to work on, ---well til you get into haul trucks and earthmover size, THEN you need a bit of help!

When I changed out my tires loaded w calcium, I first got a cheap Harbor Freight pump and pumped all the calcium out.
Northern tools sells a set of "tire spoons" 30" long that i used to dismount the tires.
I got a 2x6 board, layed it across the tire and drove my pick up onto the board that was on the tires to break the bead.
I left one of the tires with the pick up on it all night and by morning, the bead was broken.
The spoons got the tire off and put it back on.
In the meantime, I brought the rims to a local welder and he tigged the two dime size holes in the rim caused by the calcium.
I then painted the rims with "bridge paint" on the insides,
I brought the tires to my local tractor dealership and loaded them up with beet juice, brought them home, and remounted them on the tractor.
I made sure the front of the tractor was facing outward so I could use the fel to pick up the tires from the p.u. bed and rolled the loaded tires to mount them back on the tractor.

Other than beet juice since it's not available in all areas, propylene glycol RV/Marine antifreeze (the pet safe stuff) works great and will not freeze either. For a compact tractor a 55-gallon drum price wise did the trick.

Used our 1980 Ford 3600 for the first time yesterday after getting new rear wheels. I told the shop they could have the rim rusting ballast and I just went back with air.

Mainly it pulls a 7 ft twin spindle bush hog which we got fixed this past weekend because we had to replace one gearbox because of seal failed and I didn't catch it. Traction was good on steep Hill sides so I will run only air which will help out when mowing the swampy areas around the church.

When we replaced the tires and tubes on the Massey Ferguson 265 we filled with alcohol.

One shop said the guys did like the smell of beet juice.

I have to believe you are right as I once (3 years ago) had one tire go real low and sticky beet juice was very evident.
I used an air can to limp home and promptly inflated up to normal pressures.
Now 3 years later that tire has retained pressure w/o any re inflation.

I just replaced a 70 year old calcium-rusted rim on my 8n. I was able to save the original 11.2 x 28 tire (only 2000 hours on tractor and always stored inside so the 1951 rubber was still in decent shape. I used a small floor jack, 10 ft 3/8" chain, a 2x10, and a couple wood blocks to gently break the bead.

I trimmed the radius on the larger block to match the rim with my chainsaw. The little Jack didnt have quite enough push to break the bead when I tried it with that block square.

I drained the calcium out onto a stone driveway, figuring that will keep the weeds down for a while. The other side dont look too bad, but I will probably drain and change that rim out next year. I have another new rim and tube ready to go.

I cant believe I was able to get thru my spring plowing with that tractor the last two years. I first noticed the approximately 6" diameter section of rusted out rim and exposed tube around the stem last year. I lowered the pressure to 10 psi and plowed about 5 acres with it this spring. The following morning, it had settled down flat.

It sat on blocks until I had a chance to change the rim last weekend. It really was not that hard of a job. I am looking forward to doing the other side but too much other stuff to do now so that will have to wait until next summer.

When we had our rims replaced recently on the 3600 Ford we did not refill the tires and everything is a working well traction wise for Bush Hogging even on the hills.

I didnt want to put the calcium back in because I want to use this tractor for dragging logs out of my woods and I will get less rutting without it. I am sure it wont work as well for plowing but I have another tractor I can use for that.
Also, the old 8n will be worth about $ 1000 more with two new, unloaded rims than it would be with two rusty loaded ones.
