Walmart - End of an Era

Gone are the days when an owner or worker ran out to your car with a smile
and asked, "filler up". Then cleaned your windshield, checked your oil, and aired up your tires.
Gone are the days when Krogers had all registers manned, a bagger at each register, and another to rotate back in while your bagger wheeled your cart out to your car and put the groceries in your trunk before taking the cart back in so they were always available for the next customer. These young men were not only learning responsibility and pride in earning their own money, they were also learning communication skills with all ages of customers.
Gone are the days when young people learned talking skills by using the phone to talk to their relatives and friends. Now they text in shorthand without any expression on their face.

Walmart Canada pulled the self checkouts out.

In practice unless you are in a line of people with small orders they are no quicker. Get a few people in line with cart fulls and any time savings are gone.

Sort of looks like a sales promotion for the new machine mentioned.
I am amazed at what "advanced society" really means.

Gone are the jobs, I wonder why... Are we becomming a society of electronic dependent introverts?

Pacerron, Don't forget none of today's cashiers can make change unless the computerized register tells them how much change to give. If ever the power goes out....business stops, it has happened to me once when I was checking out....I had to help the gal and show her how to count out change from the money tendered without the computer....Sad.

True. In my experience, a good checkout person is at least 2x faster than a selfcheckout with your average shopper.

We can all look in the mirror if we want to blame someone. As a country, we want everything dirt cheap, except our toys that we show off to other people. For those, we'll pay ridiculous prices hoping to impress people. To pay for those toys, we expect to be paid more than we should be for what work we do. We've slowly built an economy that's simply unsustainable in the long run. Walmart and other big corporations didn't destroy "small town America" we did.

There are a lot of reasons my wife and I do not like to shop at walmart but just to name a few....the store is too big, they are not consistent in stocking products, you find something on one visit you like and next time they no longer carry it...the produce spoils within a couple of days, the bakery items only last a couple of days but most of all, at least in our town , Walmart caused many small businesses to close.

+1
My nearest little town has a hardware store, grocery store, and pharmacy all in a smaller area than a walmart super store... And the owners of each are usually in the store when I go in. The prices aren't quite as low as Walmart but its a much better experience and having local businesses keeps my property taxes down.

I agree with the ambiance (SP) of small store shopping 100%, but as far as the taxes, Walmart would pay way more than the ones you mention just in sales tax.
