Walmart - End of an Era

Seems like whenever the originator (Sam Walton) dies off, the store quality goes down!

Same thing happened with J. C. Penney of the Penney's stores. ~~ grnspot

I hate to say it also but if chinamart left here it would hurt probably worse than it did when it first got here. They pushed some of the mom and pops out of business that were teetering anyway and caused property taxes to go thru the roof and stay that way for adjacent business.

I

before we had walmart hear ( and target ).. we had a grocery store and a kmart. walmart carries more products than the 2 of them together. I'd just as soon have 1-stop shopping and be done with it.. whoever's name is up on the board.

now if they just sold lumber too.. I'd be set.. :)

Menards has both wood and food a real nice lumber yard to boot they put Southerlands out of business in that town its 80 miles from me.

Now Southerlands is moving here and will undoubtedly put our local home lumber under. :confused2: It will for sure create a competitive lumber market that will benefit us tremendously but will it last who knows?

He just spent a couple million completely re-doing the store into a "big city" lumber yard shows a person cant win for loosing.

I wonder about the comments in this thread about Dollar General. We have a couple of them nearby; very small stores and I've not seen much worth buying in them so we almost never go in one. My wife likes the Dollar Tree store in the area. And we have one Family Dollar store that we've been in one time only.

Is Dollar General putting in some bigger stores in some areas?

In our area (rural Virginia) there have started putting small to medium stores (in comparison to most retail stores) in most every small community.. They seem to be strategically placed between walmarts.

Last time i went into a DG they had lower prices, BUT they just sold you less product.. IE - mens underwear came in 4 packs and was a tad over 1/2 price of what walmart sells a pack of 8 for.. In reality you spend less, but you arent saving anything it seems..

I have read that smaller stores in small communities is also in the Walmart game plan. Every stratedgy has it's time but usually follows the Bell shaped curve for one reason or another. The big malls in many areas have had their time as well and the stores are moving back to the open shopping centers for a much lower operating cost.

2X on the bell shaped curve.

It will be interesting if people will permit WM to try to copy DG. Once you set an expectation it can be hard if you stop meeting that expectation.

We've got a couple of Big Lots in this area and we've bought a few things from each, but don't go there often.

Yes, Some people are still fighting the Wm location systems...The super centers will draw extra people from areas of small stores. I know of one WM in Missouri that only has 5 registers in the front..the selection is thinner, but it has been there for over 20 years? Successfully...
