Walmart - End of an Era

We still have our greeters here, although that may come to an end.

A couple positive things to consider.
1) They hire people who are physically and mentally challenged. That's good for the community.
2) Their employee profit sharing seems pretty generous to me. Coming in around 12.7% of annual pay for one part timer I know.
3) Employee discount 10%, even on food. Plus three pre Christmas vouchers for 20% off individual items. That helps when it counts.
Walmart isn't for everyone, but it's good for some.

I never heard of the profit sharing here. Canada might be different.

I bought some Wahl hair clippers on January 12, 2000, at Walmart; haven't been to a barbershop since. Probably the best $21.96 I ever spent.:laughing:QUOTE]

I can beat that.. Back in the 60's young AF officers were expected to have a neatly trimmed flat top 24/7. We got a pair of clippers at the BX and the wife has cut my hair ever since, except when I was on remote tours. She cut our boys hair until they left the nest too. Saved thousands of dollars in gasoline, time, and barber fees. With the few hairs I have left it would be a real ripoff
to go to a barber shop or one of those "salons":D

Yes, I don't think health insurance companies should make a profit. In fact, in some states, by law and for many years, health insurance companies are non-profits. But lots of money still goes to upper management.

People get healthcare whether they pay for it or not, by law, in emergency rooms. This has been the law for many years. Those of us who have health insurance or pay taxes subsidize the people who get free care at the ER. The change in the law means the freeloaders will pay a penalty. I know that many posters don't like the government telling them they have to pay something for healthcare but it seems a good way to spread costs to all consumers. And 99.9999999% of us are or will be health care consumers.

In my family we have been consumers who have used private health insurance and public health insurance (Medicare). Both types provide similar coverage. The public insurance has always been cheaper. I'll take the cheaper stuff any day.

But I do really admire those who will pay more to private insurance companies so the insurers can make a profit on them when they are sick based on personal principles, especially when it is 1/6 of the economy. I know these same people are probably happy to pay tolls to drive on roads and cross bridges, to have private companies provide their security rather than have public law enforcement, to pay profit making companies to provide their fire fighters, to never send their children to public schools, who live off the grid rather than use electricity from government subsidized rural electrification, who refuse farm subsidies, etc. These are very principled people.

we went up to our remote OZARK rock farm this weekend. had to stop at walmart in North Ark. and there was still a greeter. On the Sams' Club subject they claimed that several persons a day were caught by them , with errors in their baskets..So it is loss control about the double counting, even when you walk ten feet out of register to the door counter?

 Got a kick out of that, I grew up in Harrison, well till 6-12. I can relate to the "rock" farm:thumbsup:

ER's are mandated to give life saving services, not preventative health care.
I saw a news cast (CNN or Fox can't recall) said the average "American" (didn't specify if this also counted illegals) pays around 1k in higher health care premiums to pay for those without insurance. Makes me wonder how much more it will cost when we are "forced' to buy guvment program care.

I still dont see how it will cause the "non-covered" now, with little resources , to "suddenly" come up with the extra $$ to afford it. The rest of us will still be on the hook for the difference.

Disclaimer: As most of my Congressman and other officials from "top" to bottom, I also have not read the 2700 page "bill" and honestly can say I have no da%$ idea what it actually says, other than what has been reported on the various news sources:D

We have two barbers but a whole bunch of "hair salons" which really surprises me. How come the men can get buy with two barber shops but the women need four or more hair salons? :D

The two barbers I use are in their 70s and 80s. Not sure what I will do when they die. I think they will work until they fall dead at the chair.

A lot of these salons do mens' hair too, not necessarily that much more expensive than an old-school barber shop.

I stopped going to regular barber shops back in the 70s. It seemed that a lot of the barbers were older guys who had a problem with men who had long-ish hair (ie-something other than a crew cut). Around that time a new shop opened with all female barbers. A bit of a novelty at the time, but they did a good job and I continued to go there until I moved away from that city.

I assume those of you who shop at Walmart have noticed that the trade mark "Walmart Greeter" is no more. They pulled them back from the door for a few days, apparently offered some of them other jobs, and laid off the rest. I understand this was nationwide, if not world wide. I'm sure the shoplifters appreciate it. But I'd just guess that the increased losses to shoplifters will be less than the salaries they were paying the greeters. I suppose it's "good business", but I for one hated to see that happen.

Hmmm-the managers of the Walmarts in Red Bluff and Chico must not have gotten the memo--the greeters are still there as of yesterday.

One of the guys whos used to be a greeter here told me even the store managers were unhappy with the order that came from on high. So maybe some refused to abide by it for the time being.

The salons in our town are all aimed at women. The times I have been in the salon the wife goes too I was the only man in the place. :D When I lived in the city I went to one of the Unisex hair cut places which is NOT the type of hair salons in our town. I suppose if I went into one of the "salons" they would cut my hair but I bet it will not be as cheap as my barber. Besides my barber has been cutting hair in town since he got out of the Army after Korea back in 52 or 54. :D He and the other barber know where the skeletons buried the skeletons in this county. Listening to these guys talks is a history lesson. Sometimes it might verge on gossip. :D:D:D

I have found out things by sitting in the chair and listening to these two talk. Maybe throwing in a subtle question or statement to guide the conversation. ;):D

These guys are worth $12 to just listen to them. :D

Course I do get a bit nervous when he pulls out the straight razor to shave my neck and around the ears!:laughing::laughing::laughing:

Later,
Dan

I used to go to a regular barber and then when he retired to a unisex place...I got sick of that and paying $15.00 ...So over 20 yrs. ago I went back to short hair and bought a hair trimming kit and now cut my own hair and my son's hair....have been for years..saved all that gas, wasted time waiting and sitting and I spared my ears from all the stupidity...not to mention the money saved....
