MossRoad,

Thanks, we really enjoy hearing it too. Something about a diesel on a tractor at full power doing what it's supposed to that is very pleasing to hear. As this was something new for us, we didn't know what to expect with the micropone in the camera. Of course, the dozer is loud to begin with, so it might be that any micorophone would pick it up, but regardless, we're happy with what we were able to capture and share.

You have to listen to your own videos on a system with a sub woofer. It sounds really nice... tree branches crackling, low growl from the engine. I think I can hear the turbo spinning, too. Turn it up loud! :D

Yea, with the sub woofer, my floor and desk vibrate just like I.m riding on the dozer.

Eddie, those videos aren't making it any easier on me to decide whether to buy this crawler loader I've been lookin' at. I really am getting antsy to push some dirt and build some ponds. I need to get started on the one's close to the house so we can be ready by springtime when the heavy rains fall. I don't know if you've seen my post in the Construction Equipment forum, but here is a picture of old International 250C I've been looking at. I need to decide by the end of this week.

Eddie, thanks for sharing those very cool videos with us.
I could sit all day and watch a guy work a bulldozer. For some reason it fascinates me. I sat and watched a D-9 push in my 1/2 mile road. It was amazing to see the raw power and also the agility it had. His, with 3 giant rippers weighed in at just under 120,000lbs!

Jim, I know nothing about buying a dozer but I know it could get expensive if it needs repairs. Having said that, I'm looking for one that fits the budget too. Might have to do a lot of the work myself to get it good shape, but I see from Eddie's videos that I sure want one.:)

After spending days on end in a borrow pit listening to the then large D9's and 641's one may get a different opinion!:D:D

Video number 9.

YouTube - Case 1550 Dozer

One of my roads has a bit of a side slope to it that I need to build up. First I needed to scrape off the debris that was left there from removing the trees, and the growth of weeds.

Really hate to mention this but will you need some tracks in the near future?:D

Meadowlark,

Thanks. Have you ever seen your dozer in operation from the front end? I know that I was suprised to see what happens while it's working!!!!

No, never have....but sure enjoyed watching yours. I literally sat for hours watching the two D6s working on my last pond.

Like others have said, there's just something awesome and captivating about seeing these great machines work. I appreciate excellent engineering wherever I see it and dozers epitomize excellent engineering.

Eddie, great videos. Couple of questions, you mentioned in one of your posts that you can't see where the blade is from the operators position, is that contraption sticking up and pointed back a gauge that you use to tell where the blade is. Also all the dozers that I know of use the controls for the blade up/down like a front end loader, push forward for down and pull back for up, do any use the up/down control like the TPH position control, seems it would be easier to judge the cutting depth with this kind of control. Keep up the videos, I'm setting here barefoot and it tickles my feet.

Milkman,

I'm not sure what post you are refering to, or when I said that. I can see the blade, but just the outer edges of it. I cannot see the side of the blade with the dirt either, but that's pretty obvious since I'm sitting on the other end of it.

The contraption on the top of the blade is to stop logs from rolling over the top of the blade and tearing off my hoses. I can push allot of logs at one time, but they tend to roll and work their way up and over the blade. Having that hunk of steel up there stops this from happening to a large degree. The times they still get by, have to either try to back up and out from it, or get off the dozer and move it by hand.

I have what is called an 8 way blade. It goes up and down, just like your laoder does, but when I go sideways with the control, the angle of the blades tilts. I go right, and the blade dips down to the right. Then I have anohter control that angles the blade forward and backwards at a angle. This really helps with finish work. The last control is the angle of the blade itself. It changes to be more aggressive while digging dirt, or less aggreassive to spread the dirt.

The secret to dozer operating is to take very, very small bites and to react very slowly. Rapid, fast movements create a mess on the dirt. Everyone who's driven it goes way too fast. They do not realize how much is going on, or how far apart a 12 foot blade is when you can only see one side at a time. Then to see the other side, you have to turn your head and look away from the side you were looking at. It sounds kind of basic, but this confuses everyone when they first start out. The other thing is they dig too much, too fast. One inch deep will fill up the blade in about ten feet. Then after that, you are just wasting fuel. A full blade is all you can move, so then it's time to move dirt and not dig it. Again, it's real simple to say, tough to understand while in the seat.

I was thinking of a neighbors older D6 that had a foot pedal that worked one function of the blade and one hand lever for the blade. His newer JD has a T handle twists and tilts side to side in addition to the forward/backward. I was just thinking that the forward/backward motion set up like position control would be a handy change or they put the seat on the wrong end.:D

Those last 2 videos were really cool Eddie.
That's just an enormous amount of dirt and debris that thing can move effortlessly. It would take me a year to move that much dirt! That 12' blade and the 40,000lbs sure make for a powerful machine. I've heard they are great on slopes and seen what the dozer operator on my place did. Do you have many steep slopes on your land? I know it would come in handy at my place. Larry has a smaller one that I drove at his place and it was pretty cool and powerful. I can't imagine having one as large and heavy as yours.
I want one!
