Would the guy that ran the plates give you the name of the owner?

If law enforcement does in fact know that the trailer is stolen, why hasn't it been towed and impounded? It is evidence in a crime, after all.

What do you guys out in Cali have for law enforcement? Back here they would have been all over it with one call. Way back when I was a law dog, I know we would have sure checked it out. Heck we used to go on cow out calls. I remember once about 2am we got a call for a cow out. We hunted and hunted for the cow. I finally found it. I pick him up and carried him back and set him over the fence. It weighed maybe 40 or 50 pounds:laughing:

Things are a little different out here... at least in my city.

Police are very selective in what they will respond and much "Police" work is left to technicians.

An example...

A few months ago I posted about a burglary in progress and police responded overwhelmingly with the first car in a couple of minutes.

About a week later my neighbor came home and found his house burglarized, window broken, took jewelry, cash, computer and the police NEVER came out... he was told to file a report online.

Two weeks after that the City Manager of a nearby city home was burglarized in my city... no police response... she called her police chief who called the chief of my city and then received a full response with fingerprints, photos, etc...

There are 14 homes on my street... we had a meeting and it was suggested we could install cameras with remote monitoring... I and another volunteered are homes for sites, another had access to hardware and another did the install... each home was asked to contribute $100 and within 24 hour we had $1300... the one that did not contribute was not asked... 98 years old and in a continuing care...

We are also thinking of paying for private patrol which is a significant on-going expense... another group did this and the patrol caught someone breaking into a car... there was a struggle and the perp was shot... now everyone is getting sued because "After all it was just a kid breaking into a car"

The officer that ran the plate is a friend of a friend and subject to disciplinary action if personal information was given out and works 90 miles from here. I've had the same at work... except I'm within earshot when the information comes back over the officers radio...

There is another option... I can go to DMV and pay a fee, provide all my information and in 7-10 days I will get a postcard with the info... they need to first make sure the plate does not belong to an elected official, law enforcement... etc.

What surprises me is nothing has been taken... the tools, rebar, tires, battery, etc.

Maybe it's a police setup like the "Bait Car" show?

Always a possibility... just not likely in my opinion...

Spoke to the homeowner directly across the street... she asked when I was going to move it and that she had already called it in... told her it was not mine.

Then she said they heard a loud scraping noise in the middle of the night and saw the trailer and a truck with no lights...

The scraping was from pulling the receiver pin and then dragging the trailer until the hitch pulled out...

I posted the plate if anyone wants to PM me and I will contact the registered owner...

I'm thinking of putting my name or phone number on my equipment... somewhere inconspicuous... in case similar were to happen to me...

I get that a lot... my first cross country trip was very educational on many levels...

If I had never ventured away I would have thought California or the SF Bay Area representative of the rest of the country.

Sounds like you need a new police dept. I agree with calling the local news. May help, may not. Worth a try though.

Even if you decide to go the DMV route, I'm sure the owner would be more than happy to reimburse you for any fees incurred attempting to contact him. I know I would. Good luck either way.

If you ever get a chance to come out my way, look me up, I will show you a different world. You would be pleasantly surprised what a nice house costs back here too! I see on some of these home and garden shows, the terrible prices for housing in your area, and cannot believe it. You have shacks out there selling for $300,000.00 dollars, that we would consider bulldozing over and building a new house on the lot. I may be exaggerating a little, but not a whole lot.

And I am not saying we don't have crime here, I don't think it is of the level that you guys have and at least we have the means to defend ourselves. Anyone of age here can have a handgun concealed in their car as long as they are not felons, and CCW here is of a SHALL issue situation. Not dependent of the whims of some public official. And no, us armed "cowboys", don't shoot each other either. It is small town America, where you can't go to a restaurant without saying hello to a half dozen people that know you and all about you and your family. So not much "getting away" with things, you are either a respected member of the community or you are not, and you are expected to be a clean upstanding citizen.

You could post some info on craigslist

Put a low enough price on it so the buyer won't balk at that little "no title" issue ;)

It would make a perfect Craigslist Scam... collect the cash and walk away.

Still can't believe no one has messed with it.

My 1725 square feet 1957 ranch style home with Formica counters and lino floors on one acre cost me 600k in 2004.

I bought it because it adjoins acreage my parents own...

Look at a home this afternoon on a whim.... nearly 2.6 million with a 1250 shop and 3600 square foot home on 117 acres... the acreage can only be used for AG.... no homes may be built.

And to keep this Tractor related it comes with a Deere 955 TLB with accessories!

It's not my style and way over my price bracket... just to put things in comparison... hard to find acreage around here and when you do... it has often been annexed by the city as this one has.

Mine is pretty close to 4000 sq ft. 4 bedroom 3 bath 2 car, 2 bonus rooms. large shop in basement, large storage room in basement, Library, 2nd kitchen in basement. on about 3 acres..built in 1992, bought by us in 2002, for $159,000. Like I said, there is some difference in pricing... Large difference in wages too, you guys moving in from out west, can buy mansions if you sell out there.

I bought my home, 2800 sq ft built in 1997, in 2004 for $162,000. Has 4 bed rooms, 2 full baths, and 2 half baths. It sits on 3 acres and had a 52'X32' barn that is now 52'X44'. It's worth about $215,000 today.

I am always amazed at the cost of living on both coast.

I have several friends that do well as spec builders...

Permits and Fees, etc can easily come close to 200k before the first shovel of dirt is dug...

Desirable homes have gone up 50% on two years around here... maybe another bubble?

On the other hand almost 40% are all cash and the balance are making large down payments...

Here is a Oakland foreclosure that went on the market for 600k... had 15 bids and the person that bought it paid 800k in November 2012.... June 2014 it sold for 1.24m with almost nothing done...

Get permission form the landowner to haul it off and file for a lost or abandoned title then keep or sell it. Part of the lost title or abandonment process is listing it is local papers, if no one comes forward, it is yours all nice and legal.

any chance you can get the serial number and contact the manufacturer ?
they may provide owner's name or offer to contact the owner, since it is
relatively new.

Legal wouldn't le t me sleep at night knowing it's stolen, and would be essentially EASY to contact the owner if law enforcement would put downt he donut and get off their butts...

I'd hat to think my trailer was setting a couple streets over from my farm, and LEO knew about it and wouldn't do anything, and because of that someone else can just walk away with it. etc.

IMHO.. this is a failure of local LEO

I'd elevate this to state police.... perhaps even IA

I do think telling the news that you have a known stolen trailer setting ther eand LEO won't leave the sandwich shop to do anything about it might grease the wheel.

Heck.. I wonder if DMV could help? Or a local state REP.. county comissioner.. . etc.
